Keep ACCA membership or resign?

Didn't find your answer?

I'm considering a career change to something completely unrelated to accounting and would like your opinion of whether I should resign my ACCA membership or not. As far as i can see, I'd be paying hundreds of pounds a year just to tell people I am a member of the ACCA and committing myself to even more money to pay for CPD even though I'd no longer be an accountant.

Have I understood this right? What would you do and why?

Maybe keep the qualification until you secure another position doing something else? Or do you want to start your own business. I know where you are coming from though, the qualification is a little overated. To be honest finance and accountancy is quite tedious and boring.

I think it would be prudent to remain a member and for the little time it actually takes would make sure I complied to the minimum CPD required. I would hope that in the scheme of things you would find it is not that expensive and could almost be an insurance policy on future events. In these uncertain times it is always a good idea to have a back stop to fall on if needed.

My intention was to keep the membership until I had secured something else, only then would I resign. I had considered keeping it for a year or two but I'm just not sure. I think if I ever went back to accounting it would be in the form of starting my own business which means I'd have to resign ACCA anyway as I don't have a practising certificate from them (I work in industry).

I suppose I'm looking for a really good reason for keeping it that I haven't thought of.

I would keep the qualification until you determine exactly what you want to do next. You can always fall back on the qualification just in case you need it. Regarding CPD, you can get lots of free verifiable resources from the ACCA website, so you don't have to spend much.

how easy is it to resign up to ACCA or ICAEW? I guessing you pay a fee and all is forgiven.

You could change career to something that pays really well... then you can pay for ACCA without a worry. Free CPD may be possible if you sign up to enough webinars, etc.

You must do something you enjoy, though, and if that is not accounting then you may as well let it go, as that will help prompt you into changing. Good luck and all the best for the future.
