Linkedin - Problems

Didn't find your answer?

I have used Linkedin for several years, and have found it to be useful.

In recent weeks, I feel like I am getting harassed.

I work for a large organisation (£120m + revenues). It is clear from the name that my organisation is large.

I have had a caller that has been trying to peddle brokerage services. It is clear from the name of my organisation that we wouldn’t be interested in their services, and it is clear from my job title that I wouldn’t be the person to speak to in any case. After around 15 calls being blocked by reception, I finally accept a call and ask how they have got my contact name. They tell me they found them on Linkedin.

Just this morning I have had a sole practitioner accountant send me an email to say that he’s added my organisation to his online referral scheme. It means my organisation and his clients can refer work to each other. If he had any common sense, it would have been clear that my organisation will not refer work to his clients, nor will his clients refer work to us. Not to mention the bad manners of adding my organisation before asking if it would be ok to do so. Again, he found my details on Linkedin.

These are just a couple of instances of around 10 I’ve had in the last month or so.

Has anyone else had similar nuisances?

yeah, to an extent.

I think these people can pay a fee for an upgraded service as well which allows them to do more with people they aren't connected to.

I get recruitment agencies contacting me asking me for manager roles when my title clearly states Director!

I think they just try anything and everything to be honest and don't really pay attention to detail.

Adding your company name to a referral scheme without permission is a joke though, I would be passing that up the chain and getting a threatening letter sent from the MD!

I’ve just replied to his email along the lines of:
‘Thank you for signing my organisation up to your referral scheme. What you missed from my Linkedin is my part-time practice. I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to market directly to your clients’.

I wonder how long it takes him to revoke my access?

I go through periods of being bombarded by recruitment agencies but thankfully none of them have tried phoning me directly, they usually email asking for a conversation.

I give them a polite response indicating that they're wasting their time and it gets left at that. I've not experienced what you're describing but then again I don't work for a large organisation. It's certainly the downside of social media.

As an employee, I found that it worked well for that reason. My best jobs have come from Linkedin contacts.

But I can see why it would be a pain for employers at times.

LinkedIn is just Facebook for people that think they have got important jobs, as well as people recruiting or looking for jobs.

Some of the [***] people post on there is just unbelievable. Actually, I think some of them would face ridicule if they posted the same stuff on Facebook.

What I can't stand is when you are included in a group message from someone who selling their services. They can't even be bothered to send you an individual message (not that I want to receive that either). It's very unprofessional. Some people are lazy on LinkedIn and couldn't be bothered to do their research. Besides the few grips I think it is a good tool.

I do get lots of contacts from it which a lot have been quite useful.

Sometimes I find it annoying when people are trying to contact my former employer to sell stuff so they contact me to see If I can get them in which gets annoying.

Overall I think it is good source of contacts, although I suspect as more paid for adverts and company pages are happening now it will end not so good.

I do find the Linkedin Police really annoying. There was some girl who was sale manager for Mercedes who put a picture up with her bonus cheque sitting on a car bonnet.

She looked very smart and she made me want to buy a car. But there was about 200 posts from the PC police saying how she was a disgrace for allowing her to be exploited and how she must work for [***] company that make there staff dress like hookers etc.

Totally unecesary as surely if the girl was uncomfortable with it she would not have posted the picture. She seemed happy enough with her bonus though. No one forces to read posts, just click past them if you do not approve.

Simon Gray has blogged about LinkedIn recently, specifically about it being the place where high probability job opportunities exist along with some tips on how to improve your position on there.
