Lost Government Gateway user ID

I cannot recover the original user ID that the client set up

Didn't find your answer?

I have spent the last few days trying to recover the original user Id that my client set up (and has unfortunately lost) I have spoken to the help line and used web chat and asked for the "original" ID, but every time after going through numerous security questions they send my client a link to reset the password.  And each time after reseting the password the system tells us that it is not the ID that was used to set up the account with.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can find this original ID?

Why are you getting involved with the clients ID - they shouldn’t share this with anyone

You should use your agent ID to submit clients returns

It is not a client he is a friend and I was trying to give him some advice. I don't have time to register him as a client otherwise I would have done that already.

If it is not a client then ignore the comments. In the OP it says client.

I just tell non clients to call the online services help desk as I have enough of my own tech/HMRC issues. But remember even non techy clients worked out GG accounts to claim SEISS.

In your original post you refer to the person that you are trying to assist as a "client". If you are a bona fide agent with your own software then you don't need to register him as a client in order to be able to file a Tax Return. That said, it isn't clear from your question what it is you are trying to do or rather what your client/friend is trying to do via HMRC online services. If the other party is trying to set up a time to pay/instalment arrangement then there is a phone number that they can call

Don't have time to enter a few fields on a portal (HMRC agent) OR a few more fields on another portal (commercial software)? I'm honestly baffled at how you think posting on here (including ungrateful comments to your answerers) is quicker than setting up a new client.

Show some respect, and you may earn yours.

Agree with the above, absolutely no way should you be using the client's login details at all.

Use your own agent ID/login.

If the client needs access to their ID/Login, THEY need to contact HMRC directly to find a way to do it.

I hope you've not been pretending to be the client (with our without their permission) - that's not allowed.

It's the old story. Joined the forum today and within hours you're slagging folk who provide you with replies.

It's a familiar pattern on here, people join to ask something, get the correct answer which they don't like, then they answer back rudely.

You were being silly. You come on here pretending to be an accountant and within a few hours you show you dont know anything about what an accountant should and should not do.
You say client, then you say not a client but a friend.

They were all very good advice, actually.

Given that, at the time, you had held out your friend as a client.

If you're not honest with your question, you won't get the replies you need.

Quite apart from that, you look to be a fool when you back down.

Hi Anne Warren,

It is not acceptable to respond to users trying to help you in such an impolite manner.

I understand you have taken offence to several of the responses but I would advise you against upsetting those who have tried to help you. Several of your responses are rude and will not encourage members to help you in the future.

Kind regards,
Maddy from the Aweb team

Then he needs to call the HMRC online services helpdesk and either get the original ID revived or the link to it removed so it can be added to the active ID. This involves security questions and as it is a personal account I don't believe an agent or friend can do this unless you are able to (in a covid secure way) both be on the call.

It is an utter shame that there is no easy way for us, here on that forum, to report crooks like you to HMRC or Edinburgh MLR unit.

Your responses clearly implying that you are in profession of accountancy yet probably unsupervised for money laundering and you are not authorised as an agent with HMRC. Shame on you and hopefully one day you will be investigated and heavily penalised.

As for sift - maybe it's time I'm to bring some kind of authentication before pretenders and other wannabes are allowed to post here. Other websites like rated People, TrustATrader need credential before someone can post something. John S. - please get a grip. Not everything is about a number of unique visitors.

John S isn't interested at all. He actually welcomes anyone, doesn't matter if they're in the profession or not. That's why this forum is now UKBusinessForums mark 2 and not a patch on what it used to be.
A certain software company I deal with jokes it has become Facebook for accountants.

That is untrue since a facebook group can readily exclude non accountants if it chooses.

If it chooses - which is what they could do here too.

Instead what they do here is exclude the good knowledgable responding Accountants. How many have been forced out? How many have left recently, of their own accord but after seeing the actions of certain mods. Or who are posting much less because this is not being tackled.

Exactly. And this first line of the About AccountingWeb section of this site bears no relation to the reality:-
AccountingWEB.co.uk is the largest independent online community for accounting and finance professionals in the UK

AccountingWeb have certainly gone downhill since they changed their business model to welcome clowns. Why don't they rename it CircusWeb?

Think of it like this.
What expenses are there? They are debits.
Who will be paid the money? They are credits.
There can be other weird things but the above will be right most of the time.
