Lost P45 - can I rely on software "fetched" data?

In absence of documentation can I assume the prepopulated data on TaxCalc is correct?

Didn't find your answer?

Search AccountingWEB

Good afternoon,

I am processing a SA Tax return for a client who has "lost" his P45. He only gave me one payslip (unfortunately not the last one he received) and said he was paid the same amount every month until he quit. A quick calculation however doesn't return the same figure as the one retrieved on TaxCalc (not a huge difference).

As the client is reluctant to ask for a copy from his ex-employer, shall I accept that the figure on the software is correct and ignore their disclaimer (Please be aware. While HMRC advises that all the information above is available for every taxpayer registered for Self Assessment, we recommend you check HMRC data against the original documentation for accuracy before submitting it)?

Thanks

Copies of P45s are not available. It says so on the form.

Just do your best. You say the difference isn't huge - if it doesn't agree with HMRC records, they'll amend it if it's worth their while.

Point out to the client that it's his fault. What's the problem in filing a form until it's needed instead of letting it drop behind the radiator ?

Thanks Lion,
One would assume it agrees with their records though? Or am I being naive?

You say you would assume so - but you're asking the question so you must have your own doubts.

Taxcalc's disclaimer made me wonder...

We have found a few errors, but mainly the whole record not being there. No final payslip?

Unfortunately not. This particular client is useless with paperwork.

A few penalties will solve all that.

He has had a few already - doesn't seem to change his behaviour!
