HMRC have sent a new director client of mine a "Director's questionnaire" for him to complete (I've never seen one before).
The very first thing on the letter is:
"Self-employed as a director
You've told us that you're self-employed as a director."
Erm.What? Surely someone at HMRC must know the difference?

You can usually spot a scam by the stupid use of wording. That appears to be the case here
I suggest you handle the matter initially by phoning HMRC
Did they complete a CWF1 instead of an SA1? Just clutching at straws really, otherwise 'what the flipping flip?'
It appears to be better than you originally made out
"Are you a director yes/no"
Were you answer no the rest clicks into place
They're trying to find out whether your client is a director of a ltd company or self employed.

I agree. It looks like HMRC trying to clarify rather than fishing for info. I assume that this is a real letter rather than a form letter.

Yesterday a client sent me a snapshot of the front page of this document, which appears to be kosher, even if there is no such thing as a self employed director.
Client has been self-employed for the last 2 years and has just been made a director of a limited company, running an unconnected business. I assumed HMRC want to make sure of the facts because this situation is slightly unusual.
The letter is 'kosher'. A client of mine rang HMRC asking for a UTR and was sent such a 'Director' letter but importantly at the top is the UTR number.
I'd ignore it and apply for authorisation using the UTR.
There will be no penalty for non submission.
And no... HMRC dont know the difference!!
