Money Laundering acknowledgement!!!

Money Laundering acknowledgement!!!

Didn't find your answer?

I have been submitting, as required, my reports to NCIS using my valuable time in a highly useful way.I have received some acknowledgements from NCIS, eventually. Then this morning in the post from some very nice company totally unrelated to me I received an NCIS acknowledgement for a report I had sent which was sent to them. I AM LIVID - how on earth can this happen. Confidentiality out of the window. Still atleast they didnt send it to my client - maybe some have been though? Am I alone or are other firms experiencing such problems?

NCIS Record
NCIS took 2 months to acknowledge my initial reports

The latest report they acknowledged 21 days

My big beef is as already mentioned here that their acknowledgements name both me and the reported person/entity

My understanding was that I give each report a unique reference number and NCIS ONLY ever use that reference e.g. "we acknowledge receipt of report ANON/11"

One day I am sure either:
(1) a client/staff member will see the NCIS letter in the post tray
(2) I will feel the need to report a client against the wishes of one of my fellow partners. Thanks guys!

The personal threat
We should not be surprised by breaches of confidentially; neither fax nor post are secure. NCIS receipts name the MLRO and the subject of his report. Inevitably, many will fall into the wrong hands.

Worse is to come anyway. Consider the case of the Northern Ireland mortgage broker whose name, business and address were widely publicised during and in the wake of a criminal prosecution of the subject of his report.

Ask yourself "When will my turn come?"

We have been conscripted at our own considerable expense and at our own very real and substantial risk. For us no public service job security, pay and pension; no Police protection; no new identity. Just complete insensitivity, a lack of understanding and respect and a callous disregard for our personal safety displayed by Goverment Ministers, Select Committees and MP's who have been misled by civil servants into believing that "accountants are a particular problem".

Don't expect help from the professional bodies. They seem satisfied with the concession of the completely useless and wasteful LIVR. Don't expect help from the accountancy press - there is profit in training and guidance. Don't wait for the Big 4 to assert themselves - they are not involved in the minutiae of their clients affairs and therefore are not exposed to the same level of risk. In any event lucrative Government consultancy projects might be placed at risk. Don't hold your breath for the issuing of Approved Guidance.

So, what to do? Why not report anonymously and keep evidence of having done so? There is no need to use the form preferred by the NCIS. Whatever you do, keep the family passports handy!

no acknowledgements
I haven't received any . What details do they contain?
Is the suspects name on the form or just a reference?

Join the club!
Yes it has happened before, to me on three, yes, THREE occasions! I wonder if NCIS should prosecute itself for "tipping off"! They are clearly in breach of a duty of care.

And how long do NCIS take?

On a related point, I understand from NCIS that 74% of consent applications are decided within 24 hours of receipt. However I have no information on how long NCIS are taking currently to acknowledge reports which are not applications for consent to undertake an otherwise 'prohibited act' (i.e. an act which would otherwise amount to money laundering).

Any feedback on this, please?

Still Waiting
No acknowledgement received yet for two posted on 3/8/04. It took three months for acknowledgement to arrive for one sent by post in March.

Acknowledgements
Never received one - wasn't actually expecting anything but, having read this thread, I'm beginning to wonder if they've sent them to my clients!
