Hi all
A couple of questions regarding the MTD minefield - I thought I'd register for an agent services account (alongside my existing Agent account) as HMRC tells us to do - all went well and I link my existing agent account to it as directed by HMRC but then when I sigend in I get this message saying it's not going to be used for small practices.
Sorry, you're not eligible to join the new tax agents service.
This may be because:
your firm has more than 200 clients in PAYE, Self Assessment, Corporation Tax, or VAT
you're not enrolled for PAYE for Agents
you're enrolled for PAYE for Agents, but you have no clients
We'll be providing services suitable for agents with more than 200 clients in the future.
Having then logged into my original agent services account, there is nothing on there for MTD so what am I supposed to be using for all client changes etc under MTD ?
Secondly, HMRC say that you have to register clients for MTD - which as an agent I can apparantly do on their behalf - does anyone know how? There's nothing on my existing agent logon to do it and I can't access the new one.........
I thought I'd sign up early to test the system for a client just to see how it works but already having issues!

Great idea. I just love those who get in early to test new systems as you identify all the problems which then get sorted out ready for us later (and perhaps wiser) participants to join in when all is OK.
(Based on the lessons of many years of experience!).

Don't tell everybody.
I have emailed the MTD team at HMRC and get no reply regarding the answers to the questions you raise . Its a disgrace. Not one of my clients has received a letter from HMRC and those I speak too ( mainly around 50 years of age ) are worried about using computers as they have not been educated to use computers. Not only is working being duplicated the whole tax system will be in turmoil .
I don't know how sensible emailing HMRC might be. They won't take any notice.
Nevertheless, I do agree with the sentiment.
Letters finally got posted this week, apparently. HMRC must have a new office junior to send to the pillar box.
None of my clients have contacted me to say they have one yet.
I received my letter yesterday.
If I did not know what was going on, it might as well be read .....
Hello, we are writing to tell you that you will be going to Mars in April and by that time you will need to use your own resources to find out everything about such a trip and ensure that you are ready to go on time. There are severe penalties for not complying with this letter and ignorance of all matters Mars is no excuse.
Contact you local friendly Mars advisor to get you started.
Have a nice day.
Brilliant post Tornado. Only wish I'd written it myself. Any chance you could get it t0 HMRC as it sums things up very succinctly!
I will give it a go too. Where did you start the (albeit failed) application process?
Is it open to agents in partnership yet? Do you know? Does anyone know.....

This should be the link to get your clients set up for MTD for VAT. The problem that I see is they are all going to need a business tax account as well because they will no longer receive any letters from HMRC regarding their VAT. They will receive an email that they have a message in their business tax account! So do we need to set up business tax accounts for everyone now too?
Good luck everyone! They certainly haven't made it straight forward for business who want their agent to do it all for them.
I've been speaking to them about this today as well.... its not ready yet apparently and that's why there is no way to link your existing clients to the Agent Services account - there are no live links anywhere - I do wonder why I pay any tax sometimes...….
"Yes, yes, get ready early. Oh - you're ready to get ready ? What - now ? We're not ready for that yet."
Below is the link to set up a new account with HMRC.

all well and good - but I have an Agent Services Account- did this months ago as I needed to set up a trust - now I need to link my existing clients - and there is currently no way that that this can be done...….
