MTD client authority

MTD please could I ask for your experience

Didn't find your answer?

I have just spent one and a half hours talking to HMRC  and am no further on than I was when I called.

Around six years ago we took over the Firm from the previous owners and wrote to HMRC asking what needed to be done. After an exchange of  letters we received confirmation that the Agents Account was transferred. Since that date we have been exchanging information and filing douments to HMRC for over 100 clients.

With MTD coming along I wrote to HMRC VAT written enquiries asking about exemption for a client. Today  I received a letter saying that no authority is held to deal with me in this matter. I was sitting looking at the HMRC Portal saying that I was authorised and then looked at the letter saying I wasn't authorised. Confused! I rang the Helpline and was more or less told I must be misreading what was showing on the screen. I protested and then was put on hold for around 20  minutes. Another person came on the phone and said that I should not be filing for anyone at all as I wasn't authorised. I asked what I should do and was told that I must apply for a new gateway and authorise 100 clients again. I asked if this procedure was inplace six years ago and the reply was "I have no idea" I then asked what I should do about MTD exemmption again the answer was "No Idea" I asked what I should do and the answer was "write in".

HMRC know how their systems work ( I don'T) , I informed them six years ago about the change and did as they asked. My question is what expereices you may have had with a similar situation and what you might do in this senario.

I the meantime I will look out the correspondence exchange all those years ago. My post is anonymous as I would not want my clients to panick so please forgive me for that.

‘Revenue’ and ‘Customs’ still run very separate systems. There is no auto update of details for VAT. Same applies if you change your business address, hopefully someone will know a shortcut that saves you from simply replacing all 64-8s. I look forward to reading it.

Best of all would be someone from HMRC came on with their explanation and advice.
