MTD filing down at HMRC right now?

I'm trying to file a VAT return via Xero.   The screen that shows the returns available for filing is not working.

It could be a Xero problem, or it could be that Xero can't talk to HMRC right now.

Of course it would be in the evening on the day it's due ...

Same problem here, since mid-afternoon. And when you ring the Helpline they say that they are too busy to accept calls...

That's why it is worth having more than one mtd supplier enabled. In under a minute you can work out whether it is an hmrc problem or a xero problem.

I tried to submit a VAT return through IRIS VAT Filer yesterday, after I pressed submit I got a 'HMRC reject' message, when I tried to submit again, it came back with a 'Forbidden' message. Now when I try to open up the Client in VAT Filer, it won't open. I logged into my Agent Services Account and viewed the returns submitted for that Client, all the boxes had zeros in and it said the date the return was submitted was 01 January 0001 !!! No idea how I'm going to sort that one out!

they aren't doing well on the MTD front at the moment.....

MTD filing was definitely down around 5pm but was back up and accepting MTD filings before 6pm and appears to be working now. It’s not clear whether it was just agents affected but it is a distinct possibility.

Can only suggest you keep trying - and if your software doesn’t store HMRC error messages take screen shots of the errors with a time & date stamp in case you have to appeal a late filing penalty.

Accountants working outside " office" hours. !!

Concerned that clients and HMRC will not believe that adequate effort made to file.

My view is that if there are system failures in the 10 days leading up to filing deadline ,the deadline should be extended. By one or more Working days.

Tax payer can still settle the liability.

Accountants working processes are being disrupted . As is their well-being.

Stress strain and worry is frequently aired on this forum.

I have just run some queries of the API and they are all responding properly. The last vat return that went through us was at 16.39.49

Having had two days offline - someone decided to help themselves to 300m of cable, I was expecting problems.

Phones and broadband were restored today. We filed returns at 15.30 and 16.30 using VT transaction, both went through without any problem.

I'm not sure it's just a MTD issue. I have a business that is below that VAT threshold so doesn't need to enrol for MTD yet, still filing VAT returns the old school way through the HMRC website and it isn't accepting them today. When you have to confirm your log in details, instead of submitting the return their website is taking you back to the main 'Business Tax Account' page. It's stuck in a loop!

I had the same issue with a non-MTD client using the old gateway at about 5.00pm last evening but after a few attempts, the return was accepted.

Easy MTD VAT

There could be numerous reasons for being unable to submit a return via MTD... MTD software issue, HMRC system down/problematic, local Internet connection issue, etc.

It has been stated before on numerous threads that having a 2nd MTD solution installed can help to pinpoint the problem or at least rule out several reasons. A solution like ours - Easy MTD VAT (https://easymtdvat.com) - is a quick, simple and cost free way to do so. When run, the software will also notify you if the HMRC MTD system is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance/downtime.
