MTD for VAT

MTD - Did you know you have to renew the client authority every 18 months ?

Didn't find your answer?

Tried to submit Clients VAT return for MTD using Free Agent this morning. Software tells me "HMRC didnt recognise your authority to file VAT returns for this client", though I have been doing this since July 2019. Spoke to Free Agent...they weren't sure. Just spoke to HMRC on a call lasting one hour. HMRC contact was speaking to colleagues via Teams. Was told to go into my Agent Services account but the only option was to remove Free Agent as software. Discovered that as authority for Free Agent was set up on 31st July 2019 and 18 months have elapsed the authority has to be renewed. But you dont renew the authority via HMRC...you have to renew the authority with each client. Went back into Free Agent and found I do not have the authority to cancel and set up the connection. Now have to speak to Free Agent again. Hours wasted on this. I can't be the only one facing this problem.

Yes, it tells you that when you first apply for authority.

Sage and Xero take you through to the HMRC reactivation page when it is needed and it says there that it has to be renewed every 18 months, so yes I knew.

However I am finding with some jobs I am renewing it more often. I don't know which end is the problem, probably HMRC since I get it with both Sage and Xero. I have learnt to live with it. And it is going someway to curing my habit of filing last minute :-)

I discovered this as well this month, having to regrant authority for several clients. VT and Xero have made the process simple. Why HMRC designed it this way is anyone's guess. No other HMRC authorisation is time limited.

It warned everyone at the outset the authority was only granted for 18 months. Also mentioned on here. Where have you been?

VT takes 2 seconds.

Please - who’s going to remember that, I certainly didn’t. And this is the first I’ve seen of it on her. I responded to a thread yesterday re a dropped connection which in hindsight is this, but I was unaware of that until reading this.

Please - as soon as I saw the original post I knew straight away we got the message when authorising software. It's not exactly difficult to remember

I find with quickfile I have to completely disconnect the link then go through re authentication again and it works. But yes I knew about the 18 month rule.

I've had to re-authorise every client every quarter on Freeagent - it's a real pain in the [***].

Reauthorisation for this, open banking, reconnecting the bank every two minutes and finding the transactions that have been dropped, migrating clients from the old agents account to that for MTD, having to put in place authorities with HMRC multiple times before they actually process one of them ....I am so glad we have all these automated systems which are so much quicker to use!!

I did not know it was 18 months and if I did read it, I forgot. I had to do this about two weeks ago and didn't even think it was to do with authorising; I just thought I'd managed to disconnect somehow, now I know why. Another reason I never do last minute VAT returns, losing my MTD GG password would be inevitable if I did.
