MTD for VAT Client Linking and Authorising

HELP WITH THE PROCEDURE FOR LINKING AND AUTHORISING CLIENTS

Didn't find your answer?

Search AccountingWEB

We don't plan on joining the MTD for VAT trial, but can anyone help with the procedure(s) for linking and authorising clients.  We set up our new ASA last year and linked current clients.  When logging into the new ASA using the new ASA ID I see:-

Start a new authorisation request or link your current clients to your account.

- Ask a client to authorise you
- Track your recent authorisation requests
- Link your current Self Assessment and VAT clients to this account

It is a pity that there is not the facility to see the clients previously linked, but I have an email confirming they are, so, they must be!

I understand we need authorisation from current clients (already linked) to be able to file under MTD?  If yes, do I access this via the new ASA , clicking the link  Ask a client to authorise you?

If I want to link a new client, do I also do this via the new ASA, again using 'Ask a client to authorise you'? If yes,  will this in effect, link the new client to the new ASA and also move forward with the authorisation process?

I am assuming at no point do I need to log into the old Agent account, where I can see a VAT client list?

Once this is done, I can update our software and will be ready to file for VAT periods commencing on or after  1 April, or am I missing a step, or link?

My apologies if I have made that as confusing as HMRC's guidance, but any help would be appreciated.

The steps are laid out here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/making-tax-digital-for-vat-as-an-agent-step-...

From the sounds of it, you've done step four but not five, which is signing clients up for MTD, which you need to do one by one using their VAT numbers.

I've tried to do my first client sign-up today (step 5 above). Very early in the process it asks for HMRC login details and takes me to the usual login screen. But no clue as to which login is required :
Our agents account ?
Our ASA ?
Clients tax account ?

I don't think they could have made this more difficult if they tried !

There's an error in HMRC's links that it first takes you to the page for clients to sign themselves up.

Log in with your ASA and it will tell you you're on the wrong page, but it should then redirect you to the right one and let you enter your client's VAT number.

I've not signed anyone up yet so that's as far as I've got.

No, I don't get that. Just links for clients to authorise us (new clients presumably but very vaguely worded), tracking authorisations in progress and linking our existing clients (already done).
As useless as useless thing.

I hope the following may help you, although it takes you in a bit of a loop, but:-

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/making-tax-digital-for-vat-as-an-agent-step-...

Click the link at point 5 and scroll down to:-

If you’re an agent, use the Government Gateway user ID you got when you registered for an agent services account

Click the link 'sign up your client for Making Tax Digital for VAT' and it should go to the sign in page - sign in with your new ASA ID and password.

Hopefully it will take you to a screen asking for your client's VAT number.

When I tried this before I was being directed to the wrong page (as Duggimon advises). The link appears to be fixed now.

I won't go further because I don't want to sign clients up yet, the advice on here, seems to be to wait until after 11/05/2019 as there have been some issues with the direct debit transfers.

I still don't feel I have the answers to my original question(s) but a little closer, so we can be as ready as possible, when the time comes. Also, hopefully, more people will post suggestions who have gone all the way through the linking/authorising procedures.

I've been unable to link my agent accounts (which both look the same anyway!). I telephoned HMRC VAT office, waited 30 minutes to end up talking to somebody in PAYE, who put me through to VAT helpline. There is a link missing within my original agent account, so my 2 agent accounts won't link. I've been waiting for someone to call me back since last week. I keep checking both accounts to see if anything has changed, but I honestly can't see any difference between the 2 x HMRC agent accounts. Doesn't help that they keep swapping between the old and new website style. I wish they had made one a different colour or put names at the top as it's so confusing.

When I talked it through with the HMRC VAT helpline, he laughed and agreed when I said the instructions were complicated and I was going around in circles!

Doesn't inspire any confidence in the system. Flummoxed :-(

I am not sure what you are asking. Are you saying that you have set up your new Agent Services Account but have been unable to link your clients to it? Or are you saying you haven't been able to set up a new ASA because your existing agent codes won't link to the new account?

Below is a link of a recording from a recent HMRC Webinar - you will have to put your contact details in to look at it - it may help as it itemises step by step setting up the New ASA. Everything is so complicated that if you miss even a small step, it appears to cause a problem.
