MTD for VAT Start Date

When does MTD come into effect for me ?

Didn't find your answer?

Search AccountingWEB

I'm confused as to when our VAT submission via MTD software becomes effective. Our circumstances are:-

Our next VAT submission period - February to end April 2019 - straddles the MTD go-live date, so I assume I submit this period's VAT return (in May) using the present manual method - is this correct ?

Our next full VAT submission period after April 1st is May to end July 2019 with submission in August 2019 and I assume this will require our first submission via MTD software - is this correct ?

All advice gratefully received

Thanks

Looks correct to me, unless you have a group registration or fall within one of the other exceptions

Have you not had a letter from HMRC confirming all these details ?

I havnt had any letters, have you ? A few clients out of 100 or so have said they've had one, but nothing for me.

Watched an ATT webinar on Thursday in which they said that letters would be sent out to all MANDATED taxpayers by the end of February and to those close to the threshold subsequently.

I did get two of them last week for two of my VAT registered businesses (both of which are already in the pilot scheme)

You may opt in now but the first one you are mandated to use MTD for is either, as you say, May-July or, if you are one of the following, Nov 19 - Jan 20.

Exempted from April start: Trusts, ‘not for profit’ organisations that are not set up as a company, VAT divisions, VAT groups, those public sector entities required to provide additional information on their VAT return (Government departments, NHS Trusts), local authorities, public corporations, traders based overseas, those required to make payments on account and annual accounting scheme users.

HMRC state they have written to all those for whom the start date is October so if you didn't get that letter you're not one of them. They have, notably, not yet confirmed that they've written to all those for whom the start date is in a little over five weeks.

I've had my letter (1/4/19 start). Arrived today.

My annual accounting and trust clients haven't contacted me about receiving a letter for 1/10 nor have any clients saying 1/4 either. I guess they will start to get theirs now, finally.
