Hi all,
Sorry this may be a silly question when setting up a client for MTD I thought I read that the authority lasts for 18 months? When I went to file the 2nd return for a client I had to grant authority for my device again. I did this and the return filed ok have I got confused somewhere.....many thanks

Most people find that it lasts 18 months. However, there are implementations where it goes wrong and then you end up having to get authorisations more frequently. If you answer JoF's questions we might be able to give you more information about this.
This is an issue which entirely relates to the implementation of the MTD software.
VT MTD for Excel stores the authorisation code in the workbook you are using, so you should only need to grant authority every 18 months. From the user guide:
Follow the following tips if you don't want to grant authority more often than is necessary when using VT MTD For Excel:
· Use the same workbook for all the VAT returns for the same business, or save the current workbook under a new name just before you start a new return
· Use a different workbook for each different business
· Save workbooks whenever you are prompted to do so even if you appear to have made no changes. Behind the scenes the authorisation code is frequently renewed with HMRC and old codes are not valid
The authorisation code is stored on your PC if you are using authority granted by an agent services account, and the above comments do not apply.
