MTD Linking current clients.

Having issues linking current clients

Didn't find your answer?

Search AccountingWEB

In my ASA i have been trying to link my clients, when I tab the button "Link your current Self Assessment and VAT clients to this account"  I get the message "This Government Gateway account is already linked to your agent services account." however when i download my client list on my ASA only one of my forty clients is on it? This client happens to be one that has regiesterd themselves for MTD. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas?

I thought clients didn’t show in the asa for security reasons . Has this changed . I can’t process any Mtd data as Hmrc say I’m not authorised even though I have an agents services account , a government gateway linked to that Account plus I am AML registered across all the Accounts . They say a new paper 64-8 is required for every client . I am having to write a letter as it took me 40 minutes to reach the helpline and then I was on the line for another 40 minutes before I was told to write in . No exaggeration .

Yes you can download a list as a csv file, just tells you the vat number though not the client name.

The ASA is only for MTD submissions so only MTD clients are listed, it's working as intended.

So how can I register clients for MTD? From the 1st April agents were supposed to be able to register clients, without the need for clients to have a government gateway. This was supposed to be done through the ASA?

There's a link on this page to sign up your clients for MTD for VAT:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/sign-up-for-making-tax-digital-for-vat

You do it with your ASA, which it will ask you to log in to.

So as I’ve registeted no clients nothing will show is that correct ?
I have linked my asa to gg and also completed the aml part of this , all went through perfectly . I wrote to ask for an exemption for a client a letter came back saying no authority was held . As we have been filing accounts for this client for over 20 years and we regularly interact with Hmrc across the board I’m not sure how to tackle this . I’ve been on the agents helpline and they said write in . We did change ownership six years ago but kept the gateway account but since that we have sent numerous 64-8 either manual or online . What’s going on ?

HMRC's authorisation system is a shambles and authorisations regularly go missing. Send the letter again with a 64-8.

Separate authorisation for MTD is not needed, they've just messed up the authorisation held. Or it could be you never had authorisation for VAT. Filing accounts and tax returns can be done with no authorisation at all and specific authorisation for communication regarding each tax needs to be held by HMRC. Also they tend to just lose them so really there's no way of knowing until you ask whether they hold an authorisation or not.
