MTD / Non-MTD Authority

Didn't find your answer?

Have been trying to authorise a MTD VAT client on our normal (non-agent services) government gateway and it keeps failing. Spoke to HMRC who advised that any MTD VAT registered clients need to be authorised through the agent services account and won't work the 'old' way. Non-MTD clients should still be authorised in the 'old' way through the government gateway. Has anyone else encountered this / is this correct? Know HMRC have lots of new recruits presently!

Question has to be why are you trying to authorise an MTD client on your old agent account?

Just authorise the MTD client on the MTD agent account, ie ASA.

Former agent may need to delete.

Yes this is correct. Already registered mtd vat clients need authorising via ASA, others do not.

I read on a bookkeeping forum that you can enter the details of the last VAT return before the client registered for MTD in your normal account to get a code issued. If you manage to get a copy of the return or can get it from the bookkeeping system.

This is what we did, and HMRC confirmed that this is what you do to get them onto your Government Gateway. Thank you!
