MTD Registering for Exemption

How and When to apply

Didn't find your answer?

Just wondering, in case I have blinked and missed it, does anybody here know how and when our less capable clients will be able to apply for exemption from MTD?  Will there be hurdles to jump, doctor's certifcates of incapability, forms to be completed or internet dead spots to be certified?

Could that also trigger a whole new self-employed business?  That of professional internet investigator and issuer of zero reception certificates?

The question was asked on the recent HMRC Talking Points Webinar for MTD - the answer was that they don't know yet !

I wrote to the VAT Written Enquiries Team about a trader who is 86, doesn't own or know how to use a computer, a tablet or a mobile device and never will. A straightforward case for exemption from MTD - or so I thought. No reply forthcoming so I sent a further copy of my letter on 21 June. I finally received a phone call in July. Even though I had been submitting VAT Returns on behalf of this client for years, they said I needed to submit a 64-8. I did so. Received a phone call on 3 August. They acknowledged the 64-8 but were still not in position to respond as 'software testing was only just underway'. (Was that relevant to my application anyway?). Off the record the person said that 'even the Written Enquiries Team don't know what is happening re MTD'. I have given up on this for now but will return to it if and when mandatory MTD from next April is confirmed (which I rather doubt).
