MTD VAT Filing issues

Anyone else having problems?

Didn't find your answer?

I'm getting a lot of unhelpfully vague error messages today while trying to file VAT. Similar issues across multiple clients on multiple software platforms, is anyone else having issues?

The errors are of the type "something went wrong", "internal server error" - nothing I can really troubleshoot.

We are having problems with a Xero client. After clicking "Submit" we are getting the following message with a different error code with each attempt:
"Unable to submit VAT return
Please try again
Error reference: 94930920" (example- different ref. each attempt).

I'm having problems today using HMRC VAT directly. This client is one that was transferred across in error by HMRC. I've successfully used my ASA previously to file for them but today it is saying access denied try later. I'm guessing its HMRC. I've tested it by trying to view another clients filed VAT returns and it is coming up with the same error message.

Yes, I too have similar error messages. Fortunately I can leave the VAT returns and try to file them tomorrow.

There is an issue on the government gateway which they are working to resolve.

This came through, just before 4.00pm

This will be viewable on Making Tax Digital for VAT: service availability and issues -https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/making-tax-digital-for-vat-se...

"We're aware customers are experiencing difficulties with viewing their accounts and using our services. We are working to resolve this as quickly as possible."
Not exactly full of detail or evincing any sense of urgency - viewing accounts or using services isn't as dramatic as actually being unable to file returns!

Also on the same page - "Some ‘VAT notice of assessment of tax’ letters recently sent to Making Tax Digital customers were issued in error." Wow, let's whisper!

Except you can't check online since you can't access the Gateway Account...dohhhh!

'Access denied', or 'you have been logged out' or 'you need to grant authority'. The fantastic new world of MTD that they about to unleash on landlords and the self-employed. And all the letters have gone missing. And the phones unanswered (although to be fair, they have answered after 15 minutes a few times recently). But Jim Harra says it's all going swimmingly.

In addition to the specific 'warning' issued by HMRC - see above - regarding technical issues with Making Tax Digital for VAT ... I have now received a more general notice:

"We’re currently experiencing some technical difficulties with a number of HMRC services. If the service you need isn’t available, please try again later."

So hold on to your remaining patience ... and 'just keep trying!'

Been having exactly the same since Monday. Also, access codes sent by voicemail to our office number have not been coming through either.
Luckily, I set up my mobile as an alternative so can get text codes sent to that but, of course, you need to be able to access the Gateway account before you can add them if you haven't done this already.
HMRC are taking, at least, 20-25 mins to answer a call (My ones anyway) and then cannot answer a simple question as to why something is still blocked even though it was reported to then on 8 July.
I could probably write a book about their ineptitude including sending out letters to clients saying DD's will be cancelled as they don't have an email address to notify you of when the DD will be taken from the account. I counted the correct email address in 6 places on the Gateway account as well as it being given when the DD was originally set up ( because the emails come through every quarter without fail). When I queried this....response 'they are sent out automatically because they are changing their system'. No-one there seems to be even slightly bothered by the fact that they are:-
1. Incorrect
2. Sent to the client causing unnecessary alarm to clients...instead of being sent to the Agent (64-8 in place).
3. A waste of money, time, energy & patience.

"internal server error" is response code 500 on HTTP. If people are generally getting this from HMRC APis (which happened a couple of days ago and was fixed yesterday) then it means HMRC's systems are broken in a way that only they can fix.
