Didn't find your answer?

I've been re-visting vinyl for a few months, and treated myself this week to a kick ass audio-technics turntable. The problem is, lockdown, so I've pretty much gone through my collection (being newly rebuilt, so only 50 or so - counting doubles as 2 - albums)

Now I need to get more, for next week. So recommendations welcome.

For the record (pun intended), I enjoy classic rock. I'm a fan of Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden, but I think I've exhausted them for now. I'm not allowed to buy any more Bob Dylan (don't ask - I'm just not). Done Metallica Black Album, Disturbed, Whitesnake, AC/DC, Guns & Roses.

Hell, I even got The Carpenters.

I could go with more Fleetwood Mac.

Also done John Leyton, Dion DaMuchi, Stray Cats.

BUT. If anyone can suggest anything based on what you should by now have figured out my taste to be.

I expect DJKL will pipe up, but other opinions are also welcome.

EDIT: Don't bother suggesting Pink Floyd. I have The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon. And don't suggest Rush - just weird.

Re Pink Floyd there is of course "Wish you were Here" and "Meddle" to consider, plus early "Piper at Gates of Dawn" and "Saucerful of Secrets".

Genesis , "Lamb Lies Down" plus soft spot for "Trick of the Tale".
ELP , "Brain Salad Surgery "plus first album, "Emerson, Lake and Palmer"
Eric Clapton, "461 Ocean Boulevard" say.
Cream "Best of Cream"

My lighter side then has a lot of 10cc , a lot of ELO and stacks of The Eagles, plus of course the obligatory Beatles, then solo stuff from John,Paul & George (and actually I really like some of George's solo albums)

If you exhaust Skynrd, then maybe Rossington Collins Band

One other band I really appreciated were Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, if you listen to anything by them it has to be the live album, "Live; on the Day of Storms"

Other stuff, Kate Bush live Hammersmith Odeon DVD/Video, Texas Live Paris on DVD or "White on Blonde" album.

Other stuff, and I am going to miss loads, Barbara Streisand, Eva Cassidy, Bowie, Rolling Stones, Who, Camel, Yes,King Crimson, , U2, The Boss,Deacon Blue, Albert Lee (saw him live with Clapton), Blues Band, Beach Boys.

Will add more later as called for my meal.

Right- LP collection has to be from memory as all my vinyl and most of my cassettes are in Sweden.

The LPs play through an awful JVC deck, a pre amp, Cambridge Audio amp, two Wharfedale Glendales and two Mission speakers(wired via a switch box so I can either listen in the lounge or in the altan (porch room))- my Garrard DD with Shure M75ED cartridge, Pioneer Amp and pair of Wharefedales plus pair of Farnell speakers all succumbed to pressure post marriage to "tidy" the lounge- something I really regret( their absence not the marriage)

So- listing of those we have on LP(if only single LP by artist have tried to note that)- I know I am going to miss some, last counted there were ahead of 300 albums but I keep buying at Banana Moon in Orebro so I suspect we are now well over 350 and heading towards 400

Abba
AC/DC
Average White Band
Agnetha (From Abba)
Joam Armatrading
Beach Boys
Bee Gees (well Saturday Night Fever)
Pat Benatar
Byrds
Bowie
Bangles
Kate Bush
Beatles plus a lot of solo albums/Wings albums
Blues Band
Cream
Clapton
Cassidy (and Partridge family)- these are other half's
Carpenters
Crowded House
Camel
Leonard Cohen (my other half's music to commit suicide to)
Deacon Blue
Deep Purple
Dire Straits (Brothers in Arms only)
Bob Dylan (more my other half's than mine)
Eagles
Elton John
ELO
ELP
Eurythmics (plus I think one Annie solo on vinyl)
Frampton ( Comes Alive only)
Fleetwood Mac
Focus(Hocus Pocus only)
Genesis
Goodbye Mr Mackenzie
Billy Joel
King Crimson (Court of Crimson King only)
Albert Lee (Hiding only)
Led Zeppelin
Lynyrd Skynyrd + Rossington Collins Band
Mike Oldfield
Monkees
Moody Blues
Proclaimers
Pink Floyd
Reo Speedwagon
Rolling Stones
Roxy Music
Rush
Santana
Simon & Garfunkel
Supertramp
Barbara Streisand
Lisa Stansfield
Simple Minds
Bruce Springsteen
Texas
Talking Heads
Tpau
Thin Lizzy
10cc
U2
Uriah Heep
Wishbone Ash(Argus only)
Who
Yes
Neil Young (After the Goldrush only)

Then myriad compilations like Woodstock, Concert for Bangladesh, Soundtrack to Midnight Cowboy, Monuments to Rock etc, etc.

There are also a fair few classical albums, Gilbert & Sullivan, some Scottish pipe/fiddle music, comedy records like Monty Python/Not the Nine O'Clock News/ HHGTG /National Lampoon and about 10 or so others that were my parents as I kept things I remembered from my childhood like Flanders and Swan, Shirley Abacair etc.(my father had a lot of classical music on vinyl and a daft amount of boxed operas but these mainly went to the Oxfam shop- I just did not have the space)

Afraid I have hoarded LPs, I never parted with any over the years apart from a couple lent and not returned, and with these I replaced them eventually

In case anyone is interested, IKEA Kallax units are a good size for vinyl.

Well you've missed off the Bay City Rollers!

Just recently, Mrs ISIHAC has installed a listening-device in the kitchen that responds to her every command: "Alexa, play the [damn] Bee Gees" and suchlike. And, although it obeys her every command, it responds to my requests with various stonewalling tactics: "I'm sorry, I don't know that record"; or "Grrr woof woof grrrrrrrr" (hold on - I may have confused that with the regular response of her canine ally, who has a similar glint in his eye when dealing with yours truly).

I recommend everyone should have one (not a canine, you understand: nor for that matter an uppity wife; but a state-of-the-art music box capable of converting whatever tune happens to pop into your head into instant musical gratification and fulfillment). Alexa - play me out...

We are a Rollers free household.

We now have Spotify courtesy of my kids so Alexa is getting less use, though my swearing at Alexa used to get ticked off by my better half (My Scottish accent can be a pain at times, cross genteel Edinburgh with some Highland/ Inverness intonations (though no idea where latter comes from as my mother's side were Dundee, Perth and Rannoch and my father's side were London,Wiltshire and moved to Edinburgh when my father was three)

Voice command can be a mixed blessing, the Sat Nav is lucky it has not had a hammer through it.

Spotify is great- in fact this evening just compiling my top 10 playlists by artist, have this evening done The Beatles, Pink Floyd,Led Zep and Genesis and will now move on to Fleetwood, ELO, 10cc, REM, Eagles, Clapton and Texas.

Just to say, your Rollers mention has given me an idea for a Spotify list- Ten different Scottish artists/ bands, one track from each.

Have got the artists down to Texas, Proclaimers,Deacon Blue,Stealers Wheel,Gerry Rafferty (I know may be cheating, but it is Gerry),Goodbye Mr Mackenzie,Annie Lennox (cannot really have Eurythmics as Dave Stewart was from Sunderland),AWB and Waterboys . I am now struggling to decide last one and am going to have real trouble with just one track for each. ( Last could be SAHB, Simple Minds, Big Country, Del Amitri or A N Other)

Only just the other day, Radio 2 played a trilogy of Jethro Tull.

Coincidentally, it was the right place and the right time.

Now, that places my age!

Audi Technics huh!
I have a Pro-Ject turntable built in Austria with the elastic band on the outside of the platter. Flimsy thing which I hate -
Wish I had my old Pioneer PL12D!

As for music - 'Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep' by Middle Of The Road...

I'm absolutely loving it. Had two albums that had a single skip on each on the old turntable, no matter how much I cleaned them. This just plays right through them, and there's no extra noise/hum etc. Direct drive, too.

When I was 7 years old I sang that in front of a packed auditorium in the talent contest at Butlins :)

For the second round I sang "Puff the Magic Dragon"

Minehead 1971? I was there in the school hols and remember "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" being that summer's hit song.

I'm not surprised if you didn't win singin' "Puff the Magic Dragon" - such an oblique reference to drugs, not dissimilar to "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". Did you make the podium, btw?

I hadn't even thought of Skynard. Definitely a possibility.

The Beatles, and in fact no Merseybeat, will ever be on my shopping list.

Bowie is on the list (but more likely Ziggy).

Nirvana and Jethro Tull, yep - may have to hunt some stuff down. If I can get original pressings rather than RM, so much the better.

Muse - The Resistance - mix of rock and classical.
Check out the track Uprising "They will not force us, They will stop degrading us, They will not control us, We will be victorious, Come on" quite apt for these days.

For pure escapism - Jeff Wayne - War of the Worlds (Richard Burton version)

What about some of the Manchester bands. No not Oasis (dreadful). Joy division? Or is that a step too far?

That'd be Freddie and the Dreamers, Herman's Hermits, and - the cream of the northern crop - The Beat Boys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWFKqCsnJVo

Oh and let's not forget lead-Monkee the late Davy Jones. Maybe Oasis weren't quite so dreadful after all.

King Crimson, Wishbone Ash, Ten Years After.....I’m trying to remember what else my brother had in his record collection.
Oh, and Captain Beefheart - a step too weird for me though.

When I had a virus (not sure which one, but I have a guess even though I didn't have a fever) a couple of weeks ago I ended up listening to
Jeff Wayne's musical version of War of the Worlds
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Wayne%27s_Musical_Version_of_The_War_...

I also came across Birdland by Weather Report in my sheet music recently and ended up listening to the original, Quincy Jones' and Manhattan Transfer's version.

You've got to include that stuff.

My Motown/Soul tends to be on CD as I came to it later in life.

I started out buying mainly Prog Rock on vinyl in the 70s and then my tastes spread, becoming more catholic. As the list above was just re vinyl I did not include more recent bands (a relative term) I have on other formats like CD, e.g Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene,REM, Garbage, Nirvana etc.

Earlier others ,as you have listed, I missed out on when younger when they were originally released on vinyl so I tend to listen to these more on CD or online. In fact I barely listen to say Yes/ELP these days.

That is my excuse for their omission from my list, not lack of interest but merely held in wrong format.
