Why do you need a VAT refund? Are you registered? If you are then you must retain the retailers' invoices; if any invoice total exceeds £250 you will need a modified tax invoice.
And, if you are buying goods at standard and zero rates you need to retain some record.

Surely there's no purchase and sale of goods here. Indeed, that may present a bigger problem if one of the old dears is into a tipple and a ffag before bedtime.
Seems unlikely that any VAT refund could be due.
Regarding the cost of the food bought have a good read of HMRC publications regarding disbursements and see if these apply to your circumstances.

Are you charging your customers VAT?
If you make money doing this then you will have to pay HMRC VAT, not reclaim it from them. I would suggest not pursuing this further unless you're reselling more than £85,000 worth of groceries in a year.
