New Box 20.1 on SA100

How to complete

Didn't find your answer?

I am using HMRC's own Tax Return software on my few remaining cases. ( It was fine last year!)  The self employed case I am doing currently claimed some SEISS which is correctly entered in the Self Employment section of the form.

However, I am unable to engineer a cross in the new box 20.1 to confirm that all Covid Support has been reported.  I would have expected to have been asked to confirm this at the end of the input process - but I wasn't so asked.

Just wondering how commercial software deals with this?

Are you sure the software has had all the updates for 20/21 returns to be completed? I've seen some say the updates wont be available til nearer the end of the month

HMRC's official line was that you could file tax returns from 2.30 am on 6.4.21

BTC software is all ready to go. Already done one and the software prompts you that box 20.1 needs to be ticked and you just click on the box.

Do seem to be some glitches with the HMRC SA software.Yesterday while filing a return, the red warning came up that HMRC thought the client had overseas investments. For this particular client, this is as likely as Rochdale winning the Premier League this season. With apologies to Rochdale.

TaxCalc has an issue in 'simplestep' where it asks 'have you claimed cv support payments' even though you have correctly entered the amount into SEF4 box 70.1. You would then presume that was to populate box 20.1 on TR8 but it does not and skips over that part of the return.

I've reported it to TaxCalc.

What do you think might be the likely outcome if, after entering all the correct figures in all the correct places, you neglect to tick that box?

Asking in general, personally I wouldn't expect it to make any difference to anyone.

Not sure. Could just be a fishing question or more likely a way to increase a penalty if you do or don’t tick and get something wrong with seiss.

As an esteemed member of this forum once said penalties are the new tax.

Penalties for errors in tax returns are based on a percentage of the PLR. Since the SA doesn't change when this box is ticked, HMRC can't sanction any failure to tick it, if that is the only error on the return in relation to the grants.

I'm not sure I agree.

Careless error can be up to 30% of the tax, but in my experience of 'negotiating' with HMRC on behalf of clients they will use all sorts of reasons to move from no charge / suspension of penalty through to the full 30%. Ticking or not ticking the box could move this dial.

Whether they should / could or even have any basis in law to do this is an entriely different question.

Hence my proviso "if that is the only error on the return in relation to the grants".

If the grant amounts are entered IRIS automatically ticks the box.

Which is what I think TaxCalc should do and why I have reported it to them. No reply yet, sent yesterday.

It does. You need to choose 'Coronavirus income' from the list of sections to add. It's the very last choice in 'Miscellaneous'.

I think we're talking at cross-purposes. I know that that is how to make TF tick box 20.1. I meant that TF does not auto-tick that box when you populate the "amount of SEISS received" box in the self-employment pages.

True, and strange they didn't write that into the software (easily done I presume).

I've noticed the same issue.
I contacted the HMRC Online Services helpdesk, who couldn't answer the query. They have escalated the issue. I'll update, when I have further info.

Hello, Where you able to get an answer on this? I am trying to update this via the agent government gateway and cannot find where to tick. Many thanks!
