Non MTD VAT return submission....options?

Didn't find your answer?

Morning all,

I have messed things up for a client by thinking I could TOGC his VAT on incorporation. What a faff! The TOGC took months to process and when finally done I found that the TOGC appears to have undone the MTD sign-up. I resubmitted the MTD sign-up a few weeks ago but nothing has happened so it seems this client's VAT account is in limbo somewhere between MTD and non MTD.

Last thread on this topic I have managed to find is here, which suggests that in Feb 2022 non MTD VAT returns could be submitted via our ASA. If this is still the case I cannot find an option using my own ASA. When I enter the client VAT number I am told "The business has not signed up to Making Tax Digital for VAT...You can sign out and use your existing HMRC online services account to submit VAT Returns and manage your client’s business details.". When I login using my online services account and attempt submission from there I am told: "If your client has not signed up to Making Tax Digital (MTD), sign in to your Agent Services Account to submit their non-MTD VAT Return from within the "View and Change" section."

I would be delighted to hear your shared experiences in the above matter!

I think if this is truly stuck in limbo you will need the vat office to sort online services perhaps or normal helpline.

I dont think i have ever seen a client be authorised and there not be options to submit vat returns via either gateway and there also there be no option to signup for mtd within asa gateway.

i guess you could try signing client up via this link
https://www.gov.uk/charge-reclaim-record-vat/sign-up-making-tax-digital-...

perhaps also client signing up via their gateway might solve the issue perhaps

my only question would be is if the client is actually authorised in your new gateway - if client doesnt show up in client list then perhapos you need to click the refresh clients button or do authorisation request from asa account to pull them through.

all long shot stuff hopefully someone else is less clueless than me and you (now there was a tv show)

Thanks for your reply. By the following:

do you mean online services client list rather than ASA (where there are no client lists as far as I was aware). That said, when you then say

is this a button you have in your ASA because I don't have one in mine!

"do you mean online services client list rather than ASA (where there are no client lists as far as I was aware)."
Yes ASA
There is a actually a client list - its anything but well advertising - anything but easy to find and anything but easy to make sense of.
Click manage acount near the top when you are logged in to ASA
click "Manage user access to your agent services account (opens in a new tab)"
click clients
and you have a list of clients (wowsers !)- you will need to manually add references to make sense of this list - but you can do control f for Vat numbers to see if your client is there.

ref - you need to click the refresh clients button

"Copy across more VAT and Self Assessment client authorisations"
this is the buton i meant which is near the top middle of the main asa login page - notg convinced selecting this button serves any purpose other than fisrt "aligment request" - but you could try it if you are missing clients.

Great thanks - never noticed that client list before, but the client is listed. Looks like spending half a day on the phone is on the horizon.

Thanks for your help!
