Non registered charity donation - limited company?

Can a limited company donate to an individual through a funding website?

Didn't find your answer?

My client has a limited company and wishes to make a donation to and individual through a funding website. The company will get nothing in return. I believe in this instance it is towards a US patient's medical expenses. Can she do this through her company? If she can, how would I best account for it?

My gut tells me no, she can't. She'd have to do it as an individual - but I'm hoping to be wrong. At present she isn't even taking any money out of the company for herself - this should change soon. She's new to being a limited company and so far has just been leaving the money there to pay the business expenses and do extra advertising etc.

I would be grateful for any help you could give me on this. I deal mainly with sole traders who in some ways are far simpler.

What does looking at the legislation tell you?

I had a curry last night so I think it's allowable!

That just gave me a laugh. As far as I can tell - no she can't. She would have to do it as a private individual. I was just hoping I'd missed something that would allow her to do it.

Maybe instinct would have been a better word than gut. I'm still chuckling here though. It brightened my Monday morning.

I can find a lot on being able to make donations to registered charities but have drawn a blank on this. I haven't found anything to say that she can do it from the business, but I get the feeling I am missing something stupidly basic. I think I'm being an idiot but I have a mental block today. Have I asked a really stupid question?
