Not a question - just a moan

Wales lockdown

Didn't find your answer?

This morning, I had a medical appointment (which went on longer than expected, but that's by the by). At 07:50 I used my laptop to connect to work to get an hour or so, with the intention of continuing afterwards.

Got home, and turned the laptop on - and nada. Power light comes on, no POST, no nothing.

Now, as of tomorrow, Wales (and therefore me) are in lockdown. I just sopent more than an hour getting my crappy old laptop working, but it's hardly viable for 17 days. So off to cash converters or CeX or somewhere this evening to spend a copuplf of hundred quid I didn't want to spend (I have 17 days worth of beer to stock up on), just so that I can work.

I suppose it will still be better than Sunak's solution. /sigh/

Some of the 'fan-less' computers are very cheap these days. I don't use windows much but need to do some compliance stuff where windows is the only real option. I got a 'miniX' for less than £200, Win 10 & memory included. For work compliance stuff it works fine. And no fan white noise is a bonus.

Better than the rUK who are essentially being told go out and catch Covid over half term as everything is fine and dandy.

The number of clients i have going on holiday next week is unbelievable.

I believe the definition of insanity is to keep on trying to the same thing and expecting a different result. Our friends in parliament are therefore certifiable.

Down at Chesil Beach last Sunday every caravan park full and bursting at the seams, and every pub car park jammed with Sunday lunchers' vehicles. Every lay-by standing room only, full of caravanettes and the like. Most shops, including the useful ones that sell pasties, open for business and busy as bees.

And not a Dorset accent to be heard, proprietors excepted. You'd never think there was a war on!

You’re not having to live through it, though. Perhaps if you had to contend with the whopper in Cardiff (unaffectionately re-named as “Dark Ages” [geddit?] on my local club’s forum), you might take a more jaundiced view.

That is indeed one definition. But perhaps another would be: let’s have another lockdown because the other worked so well (not), let’s shred the economy, let’s potentially ruin young people’s life opportunities, let’s isolate vulnerable people and encourage mental illness, let’s allow deaths from what would have been treatable causes go through the roof. And let’s do all that because the politicians are too chicken to determine a course of action but are simply reacting to events in order to be seen to be “doing something” and at least keep the Facebook Sharons happy, or maybe just less shriek-ey.

Is it not ‘Karen’ or has the definition moved on to encompass a wider group? And what about the ultra-blokey Darrens- the shrieky posturing is not restricted to just one sex after all.

Well, my (admittedly unscientific) impression is that, whilst there are indeed blokes out there shrieking as well, this behaviour is very much more the preserve of female social media users.

So, is it "groupist" to call out one subset who are responsible for the majority of a certain behaviour to the exclusion of another subset who also indulge but less obviously?

I would say not but other opinions are available.

the whole thing is insane, if 1 in 3 were dieing...that would be a problem, the 40k dead are just those positive to a virus at death. It does not mean the virus was the cause of death. Infection does not equal disease . This was recognised over a 100 years ago by people like Pasteur.

Doctors should have been required to judge what part corona virus disease played in those 40k deaths so death from virus disease could be quantified. The problem is we have children in government.

ps recently epidemiological evidence suggests 80% of those infected have zero symptoms, not even a sniffle . So actual deaths from covid19 disease as opposed to infection is bordering on insignificance

Indeed, I think it was in yesterday's Telegraph where I read that deaths from respiratory problems (incl Covid) are currently running below the 5 year average. What does that tell you (if true of course)?

The question is whether Wee Jimmy will follow. Although if she does, you can be sure that it will be for 3 weeks, or 5.

Apparently she has asked whether, should she decide not to go to full lockdown for now, she can bank the extra month’s furlough for later. Her comments suggesting that if the answer is naw then she’ll go for full lockdown. In my view a petty and objectionable course of action - effectively forcing otherwise employable staff into a furlough position just so that Scotland can get its fair share of the furlough funds.

In any event, lockdown is doomed to fail for as long as we’ve got morons intent on ignoring the rules - witness the Brummie cafe found crammed with 150 people days after receiving a £10k fine. Every single one of those people, and not just the owners, should have had fines slapped on them. And they and their families ought to be sent to the back of the queue should they find themselves in need of NHS help.

Rant over.
