So I've just been forwarded an HMRC email by a client reminding him to file - starts:
" Dear customer, Our records show that you'll need to send us your Self Assessment tax return and pay any tax you owe by 31 January 2022. But you don't have to wait until January - you can file your return and get it out of the way...................."
Only issue is (as he remembered) it was already filed. Back in September, I just checked on line to be sure.
Surely HMRC could check before emailing? If HMRC send these reminders to everyone then lots of my clients that have already been filed will forward them on to me to double check (and I can't blame them for that). If so then thanks HMRC for creating another pointless time wasting excercise.
I do hope it's a one-off - has anyone else had this?

I've had one sent over from a client this morning - their return was filed 20 October, and is showing received by HMRC on that day!
That would explain a call I had a short time ago
Client told me he had paid for him and his wife and wanted to know what showed as payable on HMRC system
Asked if HMRC still send out payment reminders
I advised him he had paid early the correct amounts
Now I understand
Yep I got one for myself this morning.
My return was filed in April (shame I'm not as organised with all my client returns!)
Flipping irritating and I'm needing to double check it really was filed just to be on the safe side.
And me. Told me I had started the process (presumably using their own software) but hadn't completed it. As another has said I had to double check that my already filed return had actually been received. This checking of HMRC errors is almost on a daily basis now. Glad I'm jumping ship soon.
Based on replies, another annoying HMRC cluster tuck
If only they would do their job and clear the post in less that 6 months
Cluster tuck is an understatement. Just had a second email offering to help me fill in my form by visiting a webinar. Proud to say that I shall be retiring without ever logging on to a webinar.
Could be that you appear to be an unrepresented taxpayer to HMRC.
Wonder if such webinars will be made available to cover MTD in its various forms
A fair assumption but like responders above mine done in April (always first of the 256 I do, showing as received 6 April 2021) and both emails received this week. I also have myself as agent to myself if that makes sense. Don't know why, ocd or something.
Of course I havn't paid it yet, so maybe it's that. ;-/
I am my agent
I have not had one, but I had no email set up
Just added
Really this is just a sweep of all emails with no logic check of filing the return by the sound of it
EDIT
Does not explain the posting made yesterday
That client had no email address
It would be an odd coincidence
I got one offering help too. I accidentally found both of them in spam-the best place for them.
I have and it was my own and I filed on 6 April. It is an easy way of targeting people with PTAs. God help us all with the verbal we are going to get.
I have just re-read it. Half way down it says "If you have already filed your return-thank you".
HMRC have no concept of the carnage this will cause.
