One company, Two PAYE refs?

Is it possible?

Didn't find your answer?

I need two seperate PAYE refs for one company, as the 'normal' payroll is checked my the manager, and I need a secondary PAYE ref for Directors Salaries.

I've done this in the past, however it was only granted as one was weekly, and one was monthly. Is it possible to do two monthly ones, and how do I go about it?

Thanks

I have a client with two monthly schemes (one is general staff, the other is directors) so yes it appears possible. However, I didnt register the schemes, and secondly I havent attempted to register a second scheme for anyone!
I have never heard of it being a problem - just register in the usual way or via your agent dashboard?

We’ve inadvertently set up 2 PAYE schemes for the same company(!) - just register as you would normally.

Cant you do it by just having 2 payrolls within your company/payroll software

I’m sure there’s been a thread on this previously - I may be wrong but I think the outcome was that HMRC would class the second submission as a correction to the first.

That is totally incorrect. You can do as many different filings for a company as you like. It is only treated as a correction if you file the same employees again, with the same employee references.

Think about it. Large organisations have to do this all the time. Any organisation of significant size may well have numerous payrolls, all filing separately. They do this on a single scheme with no problems at all.

We've certainly seen situations where a company has been registered as an employer twice. However, only ever as a mistake (perhaps a case of client and us both doing applications not knowing the other was doing it...or a previous accountant doing it, then it being done again). In each case, typically first we know about it is a letter from HMRC re late/missing submissions...we check, they've been done, but then note the different references.

Can't think of a time where we've been involved and it's deliberate...but certainly seems it's doable.

Yes, definitely. I have recruitment clients who separate the payrolls between their own staff and the temporary (agency) labour. As others say, it's just a case of registering as normal.

I would say that is a valid use of a separate scheme because of the vastly different status of the workers concerned. I worked for a large employment agency that had separate schemes for this purpose.

Separating schemes simply because you want a directors payroll or a monthly payroll or a weekly payroll or whatever, is unneccessary, and could cause confusion when someone changes roles within the organisation.

You don't need two refs for that purpose. Just set up two companies in software and give them the same scheme ref. To avoid confusion give the employees different employee numbers in the 2 files (ie don't duplicate employee numbers for different employees)

Hmm an old thread but for anyone with a similar query in future.
It is possible to setup the directors as a different department and then the report for the manager can be just for one particular department excluding the directors. Simple enough? May depend on what software is being used.
