Online or Paper 64-8?

Online or Paper 64-8?

Didn't find your answer?

Hi,

I am in the process of setting up a small practice.

I have my HMRC Agent Account up and running for submitting PAYE and VAT which is running smoothly and very shortly I will be adding Self Assess and Corp Tax.

I have never in the past authorised clients for SA or CT.  When I authorise a client for either of these, do they get sent an Authorisation Code the same as with PAYE or VAT?

And more importantly - does this online authorisation replace form 64-8 or will I still need to send a paper one off?

Or is there a totally separate website where you can send online 64-8??

Has anyone had experience with this??

Thanks

The online replaces the paper version and yes, you do get a code the same as PAYE and VAT. I also get the client to signt he 64-8 anyway and I just keep that in the file - HMRC do have a habit of removing clients from the online service without you knowing :-)

@OP - good luck with the practice. What did you decide in the end with regard to resigning ACCA and joining another club? Apologies if you already did an update but I may have missed it during the busy period. Just curious.

Hi Tim,

In the end I did a bit of research and discussed with others and I contacted the Institute of Financial Accountants.

They assessed all of my paperwork, experience & qualifications and granted me (upon payment of admin fees, exemption fees etc) a full IFA/IPA qualification.

They are currently processing my paperwork for a Practising Certificate and MLR supervision which should hopefully be complete this week or next, and then I'm up and running starting the adverts looking for clients!

I unfortunately had to resign ACCA but Im feeling pretty good about things and feeling pretty optimistic - hope it works out for the best!!

I can re-join ACCA at a later stage if things do not work out (I confirmed this with them).

If you using online authorisation only for PAYE & VAT, you will not be able to speak to HMRC about any issues on phone. You should therefore ideally do both online and paper for VAT & PAYE. For SA & CT, either paper/online is fine. We find people just don't send us the online codes in time, whereas you can get the 64-8 easily signed along with engagement letters, etc.

Funny, I never had any problems speaking to HMRC on the phone re: VAT or PAYE as a result of online authorisation - and that is all I have been doing for the last 2-3 years now - can't remember last time I post a 64-8.

Me too - never sent a 64-8 for years and never had a problem with HMRC when I have phoned them.

We do online (mainly as in my head online surely must be better than paper), the one where we fill in some details, HMRC send out a code to the client, and the client needs to give the code to us to complete the circle.

Problem is online requires four separate applications for a typical one person Ltd Co client (CT, PAYE, VAT & SA).  Paper 64-8 can kill all these birds with one stone...but it needs to be signed by the client, posted, and seems to take a while to process.

I'm aware there is another online option that the client instigates...but only briefly looked at this a while ago, and I think it needs the client to be enrolled for the online service first.

So all methods are a bit of a faff in one way or another, guess it's a case of which one do you think it the lesser of 3 evils?!

Both

I do both.  I have found that with using the HMRC's Beta system any old online applications (2009 / 10 ish) aren't considered adequate and a new one is required before you can access your clients data - If you have the hard copy 64-8 you can (re) send this in without going back to your client.
