Online registration for non nominated partner?

Didn't find your answer?

I am having no end of trouble trying to register a non nominated partner for Self Assessment and Class 2 NIC online. The postal forms are easy, fill out an SA400 for the partnership, enclose an SA401 for each partner with one down as the nominated partner, job done.

The online system is different. The nominated partner registers the partnership online along with themselves for Self-Assessment, I have done this without any issues. It clearly states on the HMRC page titled "Set up a business partnership" that "The other partners need to register separately". This is where the problem lies. If you click the green box titled "Register a partner or partnership" you are asked to sign in to your Government Gateway. When you end up on the "Register for HMRC taxes" page it states that you can't use this service to register if you aren't the nominated partner, it then provides a link to register a partner for Self-Assessment and Class 2 NIC. This link sends you to a page giving you the options of the online form service, a fill in and print form or a PDF form. This is where the usual vicious circle of HMRC redirections to the same webpage you have just left starts. Upon clicking the online form you are then redirected to the same "Register for HMRC taxes" page from which you clicked a matter of minutes ago. I do like the fairground but find myself always wanting to get off the HMRC merry-go-round when I have other things to be getting on with. I am loathed to send the forms in the post or indeed wait for the partnership UTR to then fill in another postal form for the non nominated partner.

My question being, how do I register the non nominated partner online? I dont have an SA400 to enclose with a postal SA401 as the partnership along with the nominated partner were registered online together and HMRC states that the printed confimation should not be sent to them in the post!

Thanks in advance for your advice/comments/criticism.

think you are just going to have to wait for the partnership UTR & then complete a paper SA401.

That's what I have resigned myself to now. I find it staggering that we still have to send forms in the post to HMRC. All the signs online point to a service that allows you to fill one out and submit straight away but as usual, round in circles!

Couldn't you just register them as self employed?

I don’t think there is a way to associate them with the newly registered partnership doing it this way, despite HMRC actually providing a link titled “Joining a partnership”! This merely sends you full circle and back to the online form page.

Why would you want to associate them with the partnership? I really can't see any advantage.
Once both the partnership & individual are registered then it's just a matter of submitting SA returns, cross referenced, in the normal way.
