Onvio VAT software

Do I have to wait after authorising the software with HMRC before I complete a VAT Return

Didn't find your answer?

Hi

I've recently purchased Onvio VAT software from Digita to complete some of our VAT Returns for Making Tax Digital.

I've set up the software yesterday and authorised the software with HMRC the same day. I then set up all of the clients for this month. I've tried yesterday and today opening a VAT quarterly template and the software starts interacting with HMRC, gets to 60% and then you get an error message saying that the HMRC server has encountered an unexpected problem. Naturally, I phoned Digita and HMRC yesterday and neither were able to say why this is the case.

I did wonder if I needed to wait a period after authorising the software before attempting to complete any VAT Returns. I signed a client up directly the other day and then HMRC said not to complete a VAT Return for them for 72 hours so wondered if it was something simple like that for this problem? All of my clients were on my HMRC account for VAT and I linked all of my clients to my Agent Services Account last month so I assume all have been transferred.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm tempted just to put in all the Returns in through the old method and just tell all of the clients the reasons for this but wanted to check if there was a simple solution to this issue.

Many thanks in advance.

Have you signed the clients up to MTD?

I assumed this happened automatically when I linked my clients from my old HMRC online account to my new Agent Services one. Is this not the case?

That shouldn't be an "unexpected problem". It is the most common problem.

This could be the 500 error which hmrc say they have fixed.

On the substantive question, however, once clients have joined MTD then software can be authorised and used within seconds to access the APIs.

It is likely that the errors encountered on Friday were due to HMRC's servers having issues. We received an e-mail Friday evening from HMRC stating;
"Internal server error
We are aware that today some customers have been experiencing an issue with submitting their MTD VAT returns. Customers impacted received an ‘Internal server error’ message. We have been working to resolve this and a fix has now been applied. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this caused"

If not already done so, please try again, although if the clients have not yet been onboarded into MTD, I suspect you will see a "client and/or agent are not authorised" message. Ensure the steps at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/making-tax-digital-for-vat-as-an-agent-step-...
are followed to ensure your clients are authorised and you are able to submit

Many thanks

One of my clients had one of these on Friday. (a 500 error). They resubmitted successfully this week. ie it does appear to have been fixed.

It's working for me now too. In fairness I hadn't signed the clients up individually for MTD (wasn't aware) so I think it was just down my error rather than an error with HMRC.
