Have just boiled with rage when trying to submit pdf P11D online. It wouldn't submit so I rang online helpdesk. After spending a good 5 minutes asking dozens of security questions (thank goodness they didn't ask the colour of client's socks) junior sounding person said there are no known issues and if I was having problems I should post off manual forms.
I said it sounded as if she was asking me just to go away. Surely she should be helping me to do the submission. 5 minutes go by while she goes on hold to ask colleagues. Eventually she comes back and says would I like to speak to a more senior colleague. I said of course I would.
Senior colleague identifies pretty fast that I should have changed the trust settings to submit. I dimly remember CT600's via HMRC's website and the aggro they caused. She helps me find the advice which is about 10 clicks into their wretched gov. uk site.
I manage to change the settings and submit the form. I get an acknowledgement but it's still impossible to print out the P11D, although I can print the P11Db. Good job I laboriously printed out the P11D earlier one page at a time.
So this is a dreadful warning to anyone as IT illiterate as me on the fun to come.

How many P11Ds do you do?
It may be worth investing in third party software.
Moneysoft does P11D prep and submission and allows you to save pdfs of P11D & P11D(b).
Even if you don't use it for the payroll, it is still pretty cheap as a piece of P11D software.

I agree with JCresswell, - in a previous role I used to purchase Moneysoft just for that reason - even though we used other payroll software.

Thank you J Cresswell and Tom. It sounds ludicrous but I was so incensed it never occurred to me to use 3rd party software, as I've always managed with HMRC in the past. As you rightly suggest it must be 100 times better than that of HMRC. I have another 8 or so P11D's to do, but will have a heart attack if I have as many problems as today again.
I have just called Brightpay about whether they are going to introduce P11D software. They say it will be in place by the end of May. But if it all goes pear shaped then I will use Moneysoft. Hooray!!
