P87 for mileage claim

Are letters now forbidden?

Didn't find your answer?

I have a client which needs a good dozen reclaims for employees with car allowance and paid fuel only mileage rates and have been asked to sort it for them.

Not looked at this area for some time, and was a little suprised by the latest P87 form which seemed more onerous than I recall.

Last time I did this some years ago, I just knocked our some standard letters for each employee, who then signed and sent them off.

Will those now get rejected?  Be much quicker than the P87's, but much slower if they all get rejected and I get to do it twice....

I think it would be worth a try. Whilst I've not dealt with claims, in that way, I have seen "individuals", who've had their hand held, be successful.
The letter has also included, where appropriate, fixed rate expenses, with a request that similar figures are included in future coding notices.

There's nothing in the legislation that stipulates that the claim must be made on form P87.

Well quite, but since when has that stopped HMRC from rejecting a claim?

I’ve always used the form.
Sorry
