Paying S/A tax electronically - the danger of logical thought

Paying S/A tax electronically - the danger of...

Didn't find your answer?

I was well prepared for paying my 31 January 2010 tax - return submitted well in advance and I even set up an electronic payment to trigger on 25 January 2010.   In this respect, the Self Assessment Statement comes complete with a bank giro credit payslip.  So I think, I'll use those bank details for my electronic payment.

Tuesday, I check my online bank statement, and find that the payment has gone.  Smug satisfaction reigns.  Yesterday I check the bank again, and find that the money is back in my account.  I phone HMRC, but they can't shed any light on it, except to tell me to check that the bank details.  I go online and find that Abbey won't let me see where the money went.  (After they make a one-off payment, they delete the detail!)  Phone the bank, they confirm that I did use the bank giro detail.  Only then do I turn over the giro slip and find that if you pay electronically, you use different bank details!

Is it just me, or would anyone else think that HMRC will use the same bank to receive money, whatever the mode of payment?

bank payments

when I paid mine yesterday it said 'powered by Santander' I thought HMRC bank was now RBS so am quite confused and reluctant to pay more in case it all goes astray, have kept the printouts just in case
