Plastic Packaging Tax - compare notes

Can anyone who has got to grips with this PM me please?

Didn't find your answer?

I would really benefit from comparing a bit of detail with anyone else who has clients that need to think about the new Plastic Packaging Tax.

Please PM me and let us scratch our heads together.   :)

Moderators, please could a Tag be added for "Plastic Packaging Tax". I fell back on 'CIMA' on this occasion, which feels sub-optimal!

I suppose if I had any clients making or importing more than ten tonnes of plastic packaging a year I'd ask them to really consider figuring out how to do it with at least 30% recycled plastic or non plastic materials because the planet is dying.

Quite so, but (going way outside the scope of my knowledge and relying solely on what I am told), this is not as easy as it sounds for i) thinner films and ii) food and drink packaging.

It doesn't have to be easy to be worth doing, I am literally enraged about plastic packaging.

In any evert, liability to register for the tax works quite like VAT, in that if you expect to go over the threshold in the next 30 days alone, or have done so in the last 12 months rolling, you need to register for the tax. Thereafter you pay £200 a ton on plastic packaging that is not exempt.

Hopefully it goes up to the point where it stops being economically viable because most plastic packaging in use is either unnecessary or could be made from recycled materials but isn't for marketing reasons.

I tend to agree, in broad terms, that we should discuss morality as well as technicalities in this forum - so I do not say for a minute that you are wrong to respond in this way.

Can I gently reply though that, much as I have plenty of time for the moral and political considerations here, I was after a conversation about technicalities too. I've attended several HMRC webinars about the tax, and been in a consultation group with them about various aspects of its application, and I'm still unsure about a few things, and would be grateful to compare notes with anyone who's similarly delved into a bit of the detail.

For example - it isn't like VAT, not at all. Only one business in the supply chain will report and pay it, rather than everyone in the chain. Sorting out the mechanics of this is complex and it is these aspects that I was hoping for a discussion on.

But @duggimon - this is not to say that I do not salute your attitude.

Thumbs up to you for the tone of your response - a welcome contrast to some of the ill-tempered disagreements that plague Aweb from time to time.
