Post Office - faulty Horizon software

Tax implications based upon unsafe accounting records used by the Post Office [Horizon]

Didn't find your answer?

I wonder how many of those sub postmasters had their, now discredited, Horizon records used by their professional accountants to prepare their Financial Accounts and then their Tax Returns?

The Post Office Business is entirely separate from the shops/cafes attached so the only implication on the Accounts & Tax returns is the salary paid (which has it's own special rules on where you can show it).

I suppose one area to consider would be how any the "losses" that were made good were treated.

Agree. As an accountant, you wouldn't have access to any Horizon records. The subpostmaster gets his income from the allied business plus his post office salary.

Post Office losses have always been accepted as a business expense even pre-SA, when HMRC actually looked at the accounts. On the other hand, I've only ever dealt with shortages in the hundreds for the year. As opposed to zillions a week.

I suspect Jim is consulting with Paula as to whether she would implement Horizons as their go-to Making Tax Digital Self Assessment Tax Return Service software. He is finally confident he can reduce the tax gap. He wants to rename it as ERNIE2.

Makes sense. If he can't even be Wise after the event ... he might as well be Wise after the Morecambe!

Mind you, Fujitsu is still winning new and extended contracts from the government.
Computer Weekly (4 Apr 2022): "Fujitsu has won two huge government IT contracts, worth nearly £430m";
and just 5 hours ago (topical as I look out on the downpour from above): The UK's Environment Agency has awarded Fujitsu a £2 million flood contract extension.

Who knew there were so many Dylan fans within Govt and CS:
"She knows there's no success like failure, and that failure's no success at all".
