Didn't find your answer?

Search AccountingWEB

I know this has been done to death but it's at the top of my Feb/Mar hitlist so i'm doing it again!

If you get chance, could you post the names of any PM software you know of so I can check them all out.  Reviews also welcome of course...

I'll update the master list below with all suggestions as an easy point of reference.

Capium Practice Management

CCH Practice Management

CentreCRM

Some others
WorkflowMax
Affinity live
Work [etc]

I have tried all of the above plus some on your list. I have given up and reverted to Todoist for deadlines plus Base for CRM. Many of the others had too much time sheet functionality which I didn't want and billing integration which I didn't need.

I spent a few months looking at Glide to monitor deadlines and workflow but I found the UI impenetrable despite an online demo from the (extremely helpful) director.

An early trial of Centre CRM suggested that some incorrect deadlines were being set. Not good and defeats the object!

Thanks - could you elaborate on that slightly?

CT - first year
The CT filing deadlines were incorrect for the first period of trading when the financial accounting period and CT AP didn't match. For subsequent full years, when the deadline "normalised" (not my word), the data was correct.

Noted.  Can only system handle that ok or is it something that catches most out?

Capium Practice Management looked good on the demo we tried. We are having another demo in a couple of weeks when the letters have been built in. It seemed to tick a lot of our boxes and the price is good too compared to other PM solutions.

We didn't like the fact it was demo only though. We much prefer to have a 'play'.

I actually think that would probably be the best solution (apart from it not being able to auto generate reminder/request emails like CentreCRM can).

I'm not however nearly tech savvy enough to put something together.

This was very basic in my opinion, and not worth the money when compared to others of a similar cost.

The pricing is almost identical to Capium. However, Capium has lots more features and flexibility - it is one of the better ones we have seen.

Know it's a big ask but I don't suppose you'd share your views to date on any you've been looking at?  Only need be brief.

Really don't need time & fees, job management is the key for me.

Off the top of my head...

Firmzen - seemed good. I liked that it could text clients to remind them of meetings, but a costly nicety that isn't essential. I didn't like the look, but overall it was pretty flexible and not a bad bit of software.

Glide - almost identical to Practice Flow. Same developers?

Workflow Max - Not dedicated to accountants. Would have taken a lot of time to set up for our needs.

Practice Launchpad - Lack of screenshots and demo stopped me from looking further.

Capium - Tasks and sub-tasks worked well and could assign sub-tasks to different users. Could set recurring tasks. Flexible to add fields as default for client information.

If Carlsberg did practice management software?

Howard once you have reviewed them all are you going to publish a league table of how they faired. That would bring some lively discussion to AWEB. Next year we could do "now that's what I call Practice Management 2"

Call it an easy point of reference for the many threads we start on an almost daily basis!

I've only got 2-3 weeks to pull this off though so time to get ones rear into gear...

Just had my demo - certainly looks impressive.  Looking forward to a proper poke around in there next week.  Any particular hurdles you've come up against so far?

Hi Andrew.  Apologies, you must think i'm quite rude for not replying to you sooner.  I personally feel as though I know my way around BTC well enough to know it's not what i'm after in it's current form - even if there are small things i'm missing, it just doesn't work for me as a whole in terms of PM.

Re upcoming dev - I may well give you a call next week but unless there's literally a complete overhaul due within the month I doubt it'll make too much difference.  I do love BTC in terms of tax but PM is the most important thing for me right now so it's important I have something revised in place before the end of March at the very latest.

@ Howard

Out of curiousity, what are the shortcomings of BTC PM for you?

I use it, along with the full tax package, and I find that it fits my requirements, but I'm a sole practitioner with no staff and generally niche clients so my requirements are probably less demanding than others.

It may be however that, because I haven't looked at other PM software, that I'm missing out on some potentially useful or essential functionality, or perhaps I'm not.

A very useful thread so far anyway.

What are Capium accounting and tax modules like?

Has anyone tried Capium's other modules, like tax and accounting?

PM solutions comparison table

Great thread, Howard. It's very useful, especially as you have continually updated your list at the top of this thread and provide links to all of the web sites. Which package did you go for in the end, and what were its decisive features?

Perhaps accountingWEB would like to prepare a feature on practice management solutions that offered a table showing comparative features across the various packages? I agree with Howard that the key feature for me is job/task management, with the ability to generate tailored engagement letters and other CRM tools a useful add-on. Comparative features to highlight might include:

single or multi-user accesscloud or local hostingjob and sub-task managementCRM management of leads & prospectsgeneration of engagement letterspricing

Any such article could include products that also provide tax or accounts production modules, but the article should focus solely on the PM features, as there are many other posts on this site that discuss tax and accounts production software at length.
