QuickBook Desktop Discontinued

What are the viable options now?

Didn't find your answer?

I am devastated to learn this morning that QB desktop is being discontinued and was wondering if anyone had any viable alternatives?

We already use QB Online for several clients but quite frankly I think it's rubbish - the speed of data entry is awful as is the functionality and the bugs are too numerous to mention.  Having only ever used QB I also hate SAGE.

Has anyone got any recommendations for businesses migrating from QB desktop - we have a few clients around the million-turnover mark with high volume transactions in multi-currency with stock too

Thanks

I talked to QB
Apparently companies are saying they have a legal problem (the 7 year data maintenance) if they cant continue to access their QB file, so QB is ‘working on it’. There are no answers though. Currently QB has a bigger problem because the withdrawal of Internet Explorer means problems with transfer to qbo. The man I spoke to thought they would have a solution after 31 Jan but he couldn’t guarantee it.
Take from that what you wish !

Ooo thank you for that, that's very helpful!
Actually Xero, which I find to be more user friendly for clients, reckon they can migrate QB Desktop data using movemybooks.co.uk , so I will try that for at least a couple / those who want to do their own bookkeeping.

I took a punt and bought a 'few' shares in SAGE a week or so ago (not because i think it is great software, but the stats looked positive and i thought there might be some MTD induced surge in the pipeline).

So based on nothing else but my own investment returns I'd encourage you to move all your QB customers to SAGE!

PS in case anyone cares, I got in at a not unreasonable (i thought at the time) £6.85 per share towards the end of July. They are now at £7.41 so I'm just over 8% up in a week but looking at my HL account it says that today Cannacord Genuity have today upgraded the stock from 'hold' to 'buy' and revised their target price from £7.60 to £8.75. So, if you lot not only get your clients on the software, but happen to pile in on the shares, too, then hopefully all the better (for me)

A little birdie from QB support just told me that closure of QB desktop has been extended from 31 January to 30 June.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Thanks

Yes, they emailed users today with this news.
It is still unclear as to whether they will ever get the conversion utility back in action, its been out of use for two months now, all sorts of reasons and rumours about that.

Here is the email:

Deadline extended until
30 June 2023

We’re getting in touch to share some important information about the discontinuation of QuickBooks Desktop.

Deadline Extended to 30 June 2023
After taking time to listen to feedback and understand your concerns, we’ve decided to extend the deadline for the discontinuation of QuickBooks Desktop, and you'll have access to your Desktop product until 30 June 2023.

This decision has been taken to make sure you have ample time to prepare for the future, and provide you with the best possible migration experience, whether that's with QuickBooks or elsewhere.
Migrate to QuickBooks Online with MoveMyBooks
To help transition to QuickBooks Online - we’ve teamed up with Move My Books - a leading data conversion tool for accounting software, giving you the option of transferring your historical accounting data to QuickBooks Online.

Rest assured if you decide to leave QuickBooks and use alternative accounting software, our support team will look to offer guidance where possible.
When can I begin migration?
We’ll be in touch in October 2022 to provide more details on your migration options, along with further information on how you can access your historical accounting data after QuickBooks Desktop is discontinued.
Thanks,
The QuickBooks Team

The problem with this for me is that my QB is over 22 years old so in order to preserve my data I would need to pay MoveMyBooks £180 for 2 years plus an additional £75 / annum thereafter = £5,100. Beggars belief really as a up to a few months ago I could have converted using QB own online method since the number of transactions of the company file was well below their upper limit. So my options seem to be quite limited as I'm not prepared to shell out £5,100 for the privilege of being able to view historical data. Not entirely sure where to go from here really :-(

22 years? Damn that's loyalty. Actually I'm probably about 18 or so years with it now. I'm so livid that they're discontinuing, and angered that I had to discover the migrate wasn't working for myself after having persuaded a client to shell out for a new sub on the assumption the migrate *would* work, and was told I could "journal on my last TB", that I am very probably going to move my larger clients onto Xero. The smaller ones to VT.

Until yesterday they were promising a new migration utility that would handle the largest files without the limit imposed by the previous version.
This still appears on the discontinuation 'support' hub

https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-uk/help-article/move-onli...

But that hasn't been updated since late July.

The implication of the email is that they have now abandoned providing the utility and delegated the whole thing to movemybooks who will only deal with small amounts of data ..... although we now await for more news in October.

What a f***ing shambles...

Seen the latest? Today's news - MTD deferred to April 26, and turnover limit increased to £50k.
I wonder if QuickBooks Desktop might continue?
I am definitely not going to rush all my clients onto Cloud software anway.

Just picking up on this old thread which is very interesting - I share everyone's frustration & anger.

I had to convert around 40 clients from Desktop to Online in March/April 2020 - fun times!

I have one remaining client using Desktop as Online will not handle their inventory requirements - although I had to setup an Online account to handle the payroll which is then journalled in to Desktop.
The demise of Desktop means that we reluctantly have to migrate to Online & the plan is to integrate SOS Inventory to handle the inventory side.
I started the migration process yesterday but hit a brick wall as the migration process has been disabled - apparently we have to use movemybooks who will charge around £600 to migrate 10 years of data.
All this is too much & I'm trying to think of a plan B whereby my client continues to use Desktop, albeit unsupported, & I use a workaround to file the quarterly VAT - either via journal into Online, or some MTD bridging software.

Does anyone know definitively whether Desktop will still work after 30th June 2023?

Hi, is SOS Inventory available in the UK? We are planning to switch to QB online soon and use an inventory app as we need assemblies and production features but I thought SOS was only available in US, we are considering Erplain as an inventory app to sync with QB online.

I queried this with SOS Inventory Support - they replied:

Andrew, yes, SOS is available in the UK and will automatically convert to which ever version of QuickBooks Online once the two accounts are synced.

I also heard back from my QuickBooks Account Manager - he stated:

It won’t be possible to use QB Desktop after 30/06/23 as both support and access will cease after the sunset date.

I wonder what is going to happen to QuickBooks Desktop at midnight.
I wonder if the end to the access is already in the software, or if it is being sent via the internet at midnight tonight, in which case would disconnecting from the internet would mean your historic data is still accessible?
You would need to get another computer for internet access.
I did ask QB Desktop Support this, they were going to get back to me, and guess what? They didn't!
