In the cloud accounting space for SMEs the hierarchy goes something like Xero, QBO, FreeAgent then everyone else of which there is no one worth looking at. If you need something more sophisticated then you're in the realms of AccountsIQ or similar, but these kind of systems need to be specced properly.

I've not used Freshbooks but I can say Freshbooks is definitely better. Horrible software is Quickbooks.

No matter how many times I try, I cannot get on with quickbooks at all. I wouldn't use it if it was free.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. The only thing Quickbooks is good for is getting rid of annoying clients who insist on using it.

I use QB for all clients. Works well with no issues. Xero is a bit more clunky and more old fashioned I would say.

Freshbooks I have not used but transferred a client out of it as not up to needed spec.

Dafuq is freshbooks?

Just googled it - looks like a bandwagon pile of junk to me. Makes me think of GoProposal, but with bookkeeping attached.

Have clients that use Xero, Quickbooks and Sage

Have to say I don't like Quickbooks at all. Not intuitive, difficult to find things, don't like it. Some clients like it because it has a good mobile app that is better than Xero's I think.

But as a piece of bookkeeping software best you can say about it is - 'functional'

To the various commenters above (and elsewhere) who use modern, cloud bookkeeping software but decry QBO, I wonder whether they perhaps either last looked at it years ago when it was not as good as the competition or simply haven't undertaken the free training offered by Intuit and, therefore, don't know how to use it well. If you use and like Xero (for example), that's fine as it is another superb product, but to say that QBO is unusable suggests a lack of training in the product. I have used QBO for years, as well as Xero, and whilst I'd never knock Xero (as it is also excellent software), I find QBO fantastically easy to use and extremely efficient. I'd happily offer an online session to any accountant who hated QBO to show them how quickly transactions can be posted and detailed, customised reports can be generated, or to answer any general questions about their negative perceptions of it. And to any accountants who are using QBO and want to join a group of colleagues to share comments (and occasional gripes) about QBO for the profession, join my Facebook group at http://qboa.uk.
