If you are due to start at your £15m road haulage soon, I would get your feet under the desk before you make any rash decisions. You already have an investment in Quickbooks Desktop, and are probably not that well equipped to make a judgement on an alternative just yet.
I would worry more about where the business is going and what, if any, its main problems are before looking to swap finance package. For instance, effective accounting for subcontractors, efficient logistics, and effective integration of time/expense reporting can be key factors. QBO AND QB desktop have some impressive application add-ons to cover these aspects. As for size, £15m is hardly a ceiling for using Quickbooks. Ask if you want more....

It does depend a little on whether they are using online (QBO) or desktop.

Personally I prefer the latter but there are loads of useful videos and guides around. Ask the great god of Google.

Aside from the occasional Americanism it's pretty easy to master although IMHO QBO does tend to hide stuff pretty well and be fairly feature light.

It's a difficult place to be.

Quickbooks have stopped developing the PC version and are busily trying to push everyone over to QBO.

There are a number of things that you can automate and features you can use in the PC version that make it a really attractive package but the step up to something more capable is a difficult (and expensive) one and I'm afraid pretty much all software vendors speak with forked tongue.

If you'd like a more in depth chat then PM me as this is my area of interest.

Intuit have not stopped developing the desktop version - the 2017 desktop version is in beta testing at the moment.

QB is ok, not least I like the fact if you make a mistake on a transaction you can go back in and amend it (so long as it is not too long ago!). However I have really struggled with the lack of a UK based user manual, either official or otherwise, they are all written for the USA. This is fine except they have different terminology which can be confusing (eg, they talk about vendors where we talk about suppliers), and there is NO DETAILED VAT GUIDANCE to be had anywhere.

......But they have just anounced a few minutes ago that the Desktop version will henceforth only be available on a subscription pricing model. They are clearly moving towards an online-only offering (2 years? 3 years? sooner?) and this will be a disaster. I have used QuickBooks Online extensively and it does not have even half of the functionality of QB Desktop. Intuit know this, but it is a more profitable business model for them, so they don't care.
I support about 15 businesses on QB Desktop and only 2 or 3 of them could possibly do what they need to do with QuickBooks Online. For example - the reporting facilities in QBO do not even come close to where the Desktop version was in 1990.
Bad news for hundreds of Pro Advisors like me and for many thousands of QuickBooks-using businesses.

Subscription-only pricing does not necessarily mean that they are abandoning the desktop version. I am also a Pro Advisor, and I entirely agree that QBO is QuickBooks Lite as far as I am concerned. I think they must know that abandoning the desktop version would lose them customers. Maybe subscription pricing brings more new customers and more of the old ones update to the latest version? I don't know, but I'm not convinced that desktop QB is going to be abandoned any tome soon.

I admire your optimism RobJoy, but I fear the writing is on the wall. If you look at the website, you can't even get a price for QBDT any more and all mention of it is relegated to a tiny, tiny byline right at the bottom of the page.
I really hope I'm wrong, because most of my clients would struggle to move to an inferior system - QB Desktop is without doubt the most functional small business package out there and QB Online doesn't even come close.

Intuit is not retailing QB desktop itself, but the usual suspects have no problem supplying it. I usually find Amazon have the best prices.

No - you're right, they stopped retailing Desktop late last year, and Amazon is certainly the place to buy the 2016 version. But as of today Intuit's website doesn't even offer a price for a monthly subscription to desktop - you have to phone them to ask. Plus, according to the announcment today, the 2017 version won't be available to buy from Amazon or anywhere else at all - you can only get it via monthly subscription from Intuit themselves.
Which again, you have to phone them to do it, and when you do, be sure they will try very hard to get you to subscribe to QBO instead.
As I say, to me it's pretty clear where all this will end up, probably within a space of about 2-3 years max. They will first discontinue payroll updates, then discontinue Desktop development, then discontinue selling it altogether. Watch this space.....
