Reduced rate of Vat at 5% apply to Wedding Venues

Didn't find your answer?

I have a client who is a wedding venue and couples are being charged for their wedding that is coming up in August and September (hopefully!)  Do they get charged vat at 5% - Do they fall under the hospitality sector!?  I can't find any guidance unless they are part of a hotel!?

Hi there - thankyou! I went through this and there is not really any guidance on wedding venues at all and the booking of a venue and the rate that should be applied. I assume they are classed as hospitality so therefore qualify? It would seem pretty unfair if they weren't?

HMRC advises that wedding packages remain standard rated when there is one supply.

However, HMRC does comment that where there is a separate supply of catering at a wedding then this can be treated as being subject to VAT at the reduced rate. Review of wedding offerings is required to establish if the reduced rate can apply to elements. If there is a package please contact us to discuss.
