Registering a New Client For VAT

Guidance on Registering New Client for VAT

Didn't find your answer?

I have a new client who needs to register for VAT.

I think that I am missing something quite simple and would appreciate some help.

I will be doing bookkeeping and VAT returns only .  Someone else will be dealing with everything else.

If I go to my Agents HMRC account and go to authorise a client and then pick VAT I need a VAT number and they have not yet registered.

It is not immediately clear on the Agents account how to register to act for a client in terms of VAT only and at the same time start their VAT registration.

Help appreciated.

"It is not immediately clear on the Agents account how to register to act for a client in terms of VAT only and at the same time start their VAT registration."

Note the old school agent acounts are no longer active other than for paper picnode authorisations (i think that bit is beijng closed down this wek so nowt left as far as i am aware from next wek)

so you need to login into your asa account

choose vat

and fromm the dropdown window there is the option to "register your clients for vat"

one question i have - there used to be 2 slightly different links one which asked for more info (some of which was unecessaey ott info of agent) - is it all now just done from here with minimal fuss ? or is there a different link still in play that may be less hassle?

You need to use your ASA (Agent Services Account).

You need to then click on this link https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/v...

Select the first line/option
Online
Use online services to apply for VAT registration or to change your VAT registration details

Next screen will then ask if you want to register for VAT for yourself or for someone else (ie, your client). y\ou then do the VAT registration online.

Once client is issued VAT number, you log back into your ASA and select "authorise a client" menu option and enter the clients VAT number and date of registration and postcode, the screen will then show you a weblink, copy and paste that into an email and send to client who then logs into their own gateway and they click the link you sent them, handshake down and you are now acting for the client for VAT only.
