Registering as a HMRC tax agent

no response or acknowledgement after 13 weeks

Didn't find your answer?

Hey lovely people

I started my own accountancy practice this year and applied to register as a tax agent with HMRC in March via letter. HMRC claim it can take up to 4 weeks for a reply but after 13 weeks I have heard nothing back, no confirmation of receipt.

Apparently the only way to chase is to send another letter. I did this over 3 weeks ago (this time recorded) but still nothing.

I am frustrated to say the least. In addition to the two letters, I've tried calling HMRC but the relevant department apparently has no call centre. I've tried the online community forum, online chat, raising a complaint, posting to their twitter account and no-one is able to tell me how I should follow up and find out what's happening. Their answer is simply 'we don't know'.

I am ready to go apart from this and it's so disheartening to lose out on new clients because of this.

I know HMRC are getting worse with response times but does anyone else have experience in how best to approach this

Thanks

FF

I don't understand why you keep applying via letter ... but if you want to check through what you've done (and may still need to do) then have a read of the very helpful guide:

https://www.rossmartin.co.uk/penalties-a-compliance/6542-setting-up-as-a... (including most of the links in there).

I applied via letter once because that is the process.

I followed up with a further letter because that is what HMRC advised me to do when I called to confirm whether my letter had been received.

Are you saying you know of another way to register and follow up other than sending a letter?

Appreciate the link very kind of you to respond on your Friday night.

I have followed everything I needed to do so no issue from my side.

Further option:

Email Jim Harra. His email should be knocking around somewhere on here.

Hi, sorry to hear you are having the same issues it's so frustrating! I did get a reply two days after I sent an email to [email protected]. This was to say they would look into and then I received a call a few days later. I do now have the tax agent account but am now stuck on adding taxes as I'm not finding the process very clear.

Maybe try emailing again and put a delivery and read receipt on? I hope you get it sorted I lost potential clients because of this issue and spent a lot of time trying to sort.
HMRC need to sort this out or they're just asking for accountants to submit via client logins :/

Good Luck!!
