Registering as a Tax Agent with HMRC

Didn't find your answer?

Hi there.

Me and my business partner have decided to start practicing accountancy in UK and the main hurdle we are facing is the HMRC Agent account. My business partner is ACCA qualified whereas I am part-qualified.

Can anyone please guide us on what exactly we need to do to set up our Agent account with HMRC and start using the tax services?

Thank you.

Your business partner will probably have to relinquish his ACCA membership.

And OP give up ideas of joining.

Unless they hitch their wagon to the IFA, or one of the bookkeeping bodies.

By the way, OP, you'll be practising in the UK (practice is the noun, practise the verb. Your spellchecker might be set to US spelling - Americans practice with a 'c'). Just saying.

If you have just "decided to start practicing accountancy in UK and the main hurdle we are facing is the HMRC Agent account" ... then you're either extremely well prepared or very naïve.

Ignoring for now minor aspects such as relevant & recent experience, and familiarity with appropriate software, you have presumably worked your way through the baseline requirements ... such as AML registration, PII, and more?

We've been working in UK based accountancy firms for more than 5 years. We just wasn't sure what exactly we require to set up an Agent account and acquire licence for practising.

As far as AML is concerned, we're working on it and will soon register for it.
Can you please elaborate a bit on other baseline requirements?

Have you asked ACCA? You cannot apply for AML other than via them.

Well your original question was addressed by the first response on here, by SXGuy.

Your other baseline requirements are too many for me to list - ranging from those specific to whatever services you intend to supply and those more generally relevant to all professional services (terms of engagement for instance), all the way through to basic administration of the business and of course marketing your services.
But I assume you know all this and more - otherwise my 'naïve' kicks in.
