Request a charity donation instead of fees?

We would like to offer life coaching services to our members but we don't want payment.

Didn't find your answer?

We are about to offer coaching sessions to our members (customers). The first session is free.

If a member would then like a further 5 sessions, we do not want to charge them but we would like them to make a donation to a named UK charity and we would like to suggest an amount.

Could we 'insist' that a member makes a donation before they receive their next 5 sessions? Are there any other issues we need to consider?

Thanks for any advice.

If you "insist", it's not a donation. I would suggest it becomes your (taxable and VATable) fee and your donation but it's open to interpretation.

Fair few cases on this, mainly in connection to VAT on admission fees.

Thank you. That was my thought too - 'insisting' goes against the point of a donation.

Could you Gift Aid your fees to a charity of your choice - that would be before tax.
