Requesting HMRC authorisation to act for a client.

Didn't find your answer?

Is anyone else having problems requesting HMRC authorisation to act for a client online? I've tried requesting codes for 2 clients today and both have failed. I know the details of one are correct as I've got a copy of the letter to the client notifying him of his UTR.

Is this the 'send a letter to the client with SAxxxx code' option? If so did one this morning and it went through no problem.

ONLY use UTR & client's PostCode. Anything else / extra causes HMRC's already poor systems to throw a further wobbly.

Yes it is, and I only use the UTR & post code. I got one of the clients to send me the letter from HMRC so I can check the details were the same as I'd used. I don't want to resort to a paper 64-8 as they used to take ages - I daren't think how long they would take at the moment!!

For what it's worth, we've done a few paper 64-8s recently and they were taking about 3 to 4 weeks to show up.

That's surprising! I expected them to take a lot longer. Maybe I'll give a paper 64-8 a go. Thanks.

Okay, we have had similar recently.
HMRC insisted we had the address wrong.
We had a screenshot of the client's Personal Tax Account showing all details matched exactly!
Tried every conceivable combination.
Brick wall, as normal with HMRC IT, so resorted to paper 64-8.

are there any zeros in the postcode that should be letters or vice versa?

There was one, and I've tried it as a number and a letter, but it's still not working. Thanks.

it is the taxpayer authorising HMRC to disclose information, etc to the agent. HMRC. are nor authorising anyone in this process. Clarity of thought!
