Residence Status

Residence Status

Hi

I have a question. If a person travels more than 8 countries in a year and spend only a month or two in UK. All income is from outside UK but come in his UK bank account. He is registered  as self-employeed in UK but no UK income, not domiciled and no home in UK. Can anybody provide  HMRC link please on this case. I need to check if he has to file UK tax return.

Oddly, while your question is titled "Residence Status", this is the one piece of vital information that you have not given us. Once you convey that piece of extremely important information then we could begin to formulate an answer.  Though in fact, once you have given us that information, the question will answer itself.

EDIT - sorry, just noticed that you state he is registered as self-employed. This presumably means that he has been sent a notice to file by HMRC. In which case, the question answers itself. If he has received a notice to file a tax return, then a tax return is required, and every other piece of information is moot.

sorry for not mentioning that major part of question . Actually this is a part of question. As per rule If a person is not resident and dont have any UK income he will not require to submit uk tax return. But here i am not sure about the residence status because of his travelling.

Why are you not sure? Have you completed the SRT or not?

What do you mean

by "registered as self employed" if not registered with HMRC and therefore obliged to file a return. Do you actually mean "self employed but not registered"?

You could start here - https://www.gov.uk/tax-foreign-income/residents.

The subject is complex, and you need to consider a lot of information about the person. You are unlikely to get a simple answer on this forum.

But as Tim says, if he's self employed he will  probably be sent out a return to file anyway so will have to complete it.

Because he is travelling in so many countries and not staying a month or two in any country so that makes it complex to find RS.

Thanks for the link Kevkava. I am checking it

If you are saying that you do not have the information to complete the SRT then there is nothing further you can do until the client supplies it, so you are just wasting your time reading anything. Until you complete the SRT everything else is just idle speculation and time-wasting.
