Retirement and cancelling status as agent for IT

What Is correct /best method to cancel agent status with HMRC

Didn't find your answer?

I am in process of retiring and clients who are actively trading or submiting tax returns annually are transferring to new accountants who will of course get themselves appointed as agents with HMRC for income tax. With the knowledge and consent of other, almost ex-clients, I have retained my status as agent  as they would return with PAYE coding problems or other matters requiring submission of a tax return.  I now need to actually cancel my agents status for these.

These clients are not in the Agents Service Account but still in the HMRC online service for agents. I know you can just delete from the list. I do not like the fact that there is no print out to record the date of the action. Also in the past when I did this it removed me from Self Assessment but not PAYE for the client. I resorted at that time to letters and waited for the client to dissappear from my list.

Has any body got any advice/experiance on the best method to act?

Rather than try to do it for the individual clients couldn't you write to the Agent Maintainer and ask for your Agent's accounts to be closed?

Not all the active clients have moved yet, also I fancy leaving myself and my sister on. I find the agents site more user friendly than the government gate way

So, which body is going to be your supervisor for MLR all the time you hold this agent's account? And how much are you going to pay them to retain access to your own & your sister's details via it?

Not really wise is it?

You can't be agent for yourself.

Basic contract law.

Luckily, I don't have a sister.

Oops (sound of a person who typed faster than he read)!

I somehow missed "Only me on it" - which takes some doing in a two-line post, but then I sometimes seem to have 'special' skills. :-)

I just wrote a letter to them, which they replied to a few weeks later confirming my agent status had been cancelled.
