HMRC 'backlog'

Didn't find your answer?

Hi,

Just called HMRC and was informed by them that the backlog for dealing with SA1 forms is currently 195 days! What an absolute joke of a service.

Wondered if anyone else had been told a similar story.

Rant over

Maybe HMRC's Director General is on holiday in Crete.

It is not taking that long to process all SA1 forms, I can categorically confirm.

Are you talking about sa1's filed online Duggimon? its like night and day filing online and via paper.

Just come of the phone from the vat office - at present they are still processing paper vat484 forms from february !! they are happy to sit for 6 months with the wrong address showing on the public database. I have beeen reluctant to force clients onto mtd so we can do changes online but at present the reality is anything in paper form is chucked in the bottom draw for soemtimes unkown.

Exactly. Client doesn't have a UTR so a paper 64-8 and SA1 were filed on 6 May.

64-8 processed 2 weeks ago. SA1 will be dealt with within 195 days apparently.

This is due to 'extra checks being carried out on SA1 applications'. I laughed when they said the number which I don't think they appreciated.

I've been told by multiple agents that they are on the standard time frame for processing paper SA1 applications and when I've pointed out that they are past this the agents are generally willing to register the client over the phone rerunning through the paper SA1 to make sure this is correct before issuing a UTR number then and there.

Thanks I may try this approach.

The advisor I spoke with was very blunt/rude so any offers of helping our client out were unlikely to be forthcoming.

I have always found the advisors to be quite ameniable "sometimes" when it comes to setting up sa records from phone request - maybe its luck of the draw who you get - perhaps some are authorised to do more than others? Nearly spat a full mouthfull of coffee over my 34 inch monior in january when i rang up and got an sa record setup and confirmation of UTR in 120 seconds from making the request - i didn't even ask for the UTR to given verbally but it wsn't polite to refuse the offer- it's nice when miracles do happen.

Oh and i would probably do online submission if i wanted the UTR that much probably quicker than waiting for original paper form to be processed

I called back and unfortunately I was told that their guidance is asking them not to manually register clients for SA over the phone at present. Like you say it is usually luck of the draw!

For a client with no UTR, you file the SA1 online, they get a UTR posted out in one to two weeks, then you do the authorisation separately online once they have it.

I have never used a paper SA1.

been told six months to process SA400 + SA401 forms, I have two filed in May which I still don't have partnership UTR's for, all partners in SA already & want to file their tax returns.
