£20/40k fees is likely to be achievable with marketing/networking. I'd be concerned that such a small portfolio would be more likely to come from someone retiring ahead of MTD and possibly difficult to make profitable in the glorious new regime.

A young recently established home-based practitioner might see MTD as an opportunity rather than a problem, seeing how we oldies see it as the latter.

You would have to admire that level of optimism.

To be honest, I expected MTD to bring in a lot of work. I retired because it was the sort of work I didn't want.

I see from the latest article the upcoming wheeze is going to be charging clients for AML compliance. They didn't make clear how we do this if we decide not to proceed with the client because of said checks.

In your shoes I would saturation bomb every accountant you can find in your area with an email (or letter if you cannot get an email address) with your interest. It's odds on there is a home based practitioner who ticks those boxes. Also, accountants who fall outside your criteria might well pass on your details to their golf pal etc.
