Genuine conversation from a few days ago:
Mrs ALISK : you’re not doing something dodgy with our taxes are you?
Me: … no of course not. Why?
Mrs ALISK: I’ve had loads of calls recently from the Serious Crime Agency talking about a European Arrest Warrant …

ALISK : That is for something totally different. It is nothing to do with our taxes.

We’ve had a spate of worried clients that think their business owes arrears of PAYE & NI. They are getting letters purporting to be from HMRC that are a very plausible fake, even arriving in a brown envelope.
We’ve sent out a warning email, and about 12 clients have already received these letters. More worryingly, only 3 of them had thought to contact us to check the amounts beforehand.
Looks like it could be a very lucrative scam going on. And one client had contacted HMRC only to be told that they should contact the telephone number on the letter and arrange a payment! A new low in HMRC advice.

I don’t know, just that the type of envelope was the same brown windowed mostly used by HMRC and other Government departments.

There are also some genuine but erroneous HMRC letters being issued, it seems HMRC are incapable of distinguishing payments made under a time to pay arrangement from those made to cover taxes for subsequent periods. Along with PAYE demands for monthly payments when the company is a quarterly payer ....
