Self assessment agent authorisation-update

Self assessment agent authorisation

Didn't find your answer?

Hello,

I applied with Online Agent Authorisation but one client has not received any letter (applied twice), one client got it, and 5 more clients  I have tried one time only but have not received any. Please anyone is using this function please share your experience.

I find this link discussed about giving my client agent identifier but it seems changed and does not work any more, is that right? (https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/any-answers/self-assessment-agent-author...)

Thanks.

most agents say these requests are pretty robust with clients normally being the weak point - you really need to take up you issue with hmrc - i suspect hmrc will simply say we are sending out but who knows you really need to take it up with them.

have you tried to get clients to authoirise you via their personal tax acount ? that may work if there is problem with pincodes the fact you have received at least one pincode seems to suggest the system is working.

I am pretty sure doing it this way will give you access to the client's online account but will not allow you to speak to HMRC on their behalf or receive copies of correspondence. Not 100% but pretty sure last time I checked.

Yes, they do not accept using the digital handshake as authorisation (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/how-to-get-authorised-to-act-as-a-tax-agent-... ). It is weird. It is the same with VAT but it allows you.

To be clear the method i was recommending via link porvided wasnt a digital handshake as such - any reference to it being such is wrong - that normally involves you asking for authorisation and this being approved by client via gateway.

The link i provided is simply one to appoint an agent using the agents known details from within ones gateway

that is detailed separately on the link you provided within the following text - to be honesnt its probably an under publicised way of quickly getting clients into sa area online quickly and efficiently. presuming they have the relevant tax acount setup

info per link

Getting authorised through your client’s business tax account
You can ask your client to authorise you through their own business tax account. They will need your Agent Government Gateway Identifier to do so. You can find this by completing the following steps.

Sign into your HMRC online services for agents account.
Select ‘Authorise client’ on the left-hand menu.
Find your identifier on the next screen under the title ‘Agent Identifier’.

I prefer do them online so you can track them. I do not know why we have system but we don't use it.

I tried to make my firm the authorised agent for my personal account. My business gets emails saying the client has not authorised you.

Well it would be nice to get the letter so I could authorise myself.

https://ember.co/content/guide/authorising-a-tax-agent

if you are following the link i provided then it should be clear and transparent at stages 6 7 and 8 whether authorisation has worked there should be no doubts once stage 8 is done the individual gets a message confirming its all done wiuthin their gateway - that may take a day or two to show up in agent area i would agree
