Self Assessment Deadlines - Agent vs Client

Self Assessment Deadlines - Agent vs Client

Didn't find your answer?

Hi,

I have a client that has been requested to file a self assessment return for 2010-11 - he was not aware he had to file a return and on speaking to HMRC they are telling him it was because he was earning over £100k in employment. He is not registered for online self assessment filing at present. So I need to get returns filed for him for 2010-11 and 2011-12 asap.

If I add him on as my client on under my HMRC agent online account I assume that as I will be filing on his behalf I will have until 31 January to file rather than the 31 October paper filing deadline?

I am just conscious that I am unlikely to have got all his info in time to file by 31 October

Sorry a very very basic question I'm sure, I just want to make sure that where I am filing electronically for clients it means I always have until 31 Jan whether they personally are registered for online filing or not...

thanks

RM

Should be OK for 2011-12

Whoever files for 2011-12, whether as agent or as taxpayer, provided that you file online by 31 Jan 2013 (and don't make the mistake of also filing earlier by paper) then you will be OK.  You don't even need 64-8 authorisation - all you need is the UTR, which presumably has been issued if a notice to file has been issued.

As for 2010-11, the filing deadline will be 3 months from the date of issue of the notice to file, so that is likely to be earlier.  Not sure without checking but that 3 month deadline would apply to online or paper filing.  But hey, do it online anyway.

With kind regards

Clint Westwood.
